Timothy of the Cay
Timothy of the Cay, by Theodore Taylor, is a book split into two stories. The first story is the backstory of a black 70-year-old man named Timothy, and the second story is about a blind 12-year-old boy named Phillip. In Timothy's story, it is explained that ever since Timothy was young, his goal was to own his own ship. Even though he didn't have enough money for it. As he grew up, he tried earning enough cash to purchase his own ship by sailing and digging the Panama Canal. Which ultimately got him enough money to accomplish his goal. After Timothy retired, he went to work on a ship called the Hato, where he met Phillip. Next, the events in the book, The Cay, occur, and Timothy passes away. This leads to Phillip's story. Phillip, in his section of the book, is blind. His goal ever since he got off the cay was to regain his eyesight so he could visit Timothy’s grave. Phillip's story begins after he gets rescued from a car. He then has to decide if he wants to undergo dangerous surgery or stay blind for the rest of his life. After some time, he decides he is going to do the treatment. He then goes to New York to see a doctor about undergoing the operation. After Phillip undergoes surgery, he doesn't get his eyesight back for a while. When he does, he travels back to the cay to see Timothy’s grave. …show more content…
