When I finished reading the book “Escape from Camp 14” by Blaine Harden, I realized that there were so many serious problems we should have known about the circumstance of the North Korea. It was actually much more horrible than I expected. What I have seen through this book was not only Shin’s awful situation but also the tragic relationship between Shin and his parents because of hunger, education and dehumanization.
Actually, there was no choice for Shin but to have that tragic relationship with his parents. Who is able to live a normal life without meeting basic human needs? In Camp 14, there was literally nothing to eat. Because of the severe hunger, there was no sharing or consideration at all. Shin’s mother always beat him whenever he had eaten her food, and he also viewed her just as a competitor for food. For them, the happiest moment was when they were full by catching rats, but it was not even a regular occurrence. They were desperately hungry and scrawny, so betrayal and snitching each other for food was very common even among family. Security in camp always taught the children that the reason why they were in here was because of their parent’s filthy blood and this made the children hate and distrust their parents. Dehumanization was also a huge problem in the camp 14. Children could not even have a chance to feel affection and they did not even know what the love was. As long as people were living inside the camp, people neither knew love and mercy nor realized the notion of family. Kids especially were just doing what they only saw and learned, which was the most abusive things. Obliteration of the human right was extremely harsh in there and it turned people into extremely immoral human beings as Shin betrayed his mother and brother. I think dehumanization might be the absolute reason why Shin was furious about his mom and had blamed her for a long time even though she was the person who gave birth to him.

The article titled “Working at McDonald’s” by Amitai Etzioni is in short describing how there is no individuality in working at a fast food restaurant. Kids have no initiative and cannot make many individual decisions for themselves. There is no real career training when it comes to working in a fast food restaurant. In saying this, Etzioni is correct. After all he the winner of the 2001 John P. McGovern award in Behavioral Sciences. He states that McDonald’s is bad for kids, not because of the food itself (which is still unhealthy) but because of the fact that they are working for them. Also, the hours children have to work are ridiculous.…

When I read the short story the prince about S. Leon Kleinman who every two months would call in sick at his job and go to museums and just have a his own little day off. I thought what the heck is this guy doing and how is he getting away with this but threw out the whole of this short story I thought he was very crafty and had a good thing going. Mr. Kleinman worked at an office type job and dreaded working there and thought that all the people were stupid and he hated them so he did it to have his little private time but this little scheme finally game to an end when his boss Mr. Graham found out that he was skipping and called him to his office to see what was the deal and so kleinman came in and they started talking and his boss was asking him questions and kleinman was admiring his painting and Mr. graham saw this and he saw that he had a creative side when he was making statements like to own a prince painting one must be a prince and then the boss Mr. graham offered him a promotion for having such an understanding and love for art. The ending of the story I have to admit I was not expecting that he would get a promotion out of all the things I thought he would maybe get fired and it was kind of ironic because he skipped work and it got him promoted and it spoke on the kind of person he was and all this proved that you can beat the system if you plan it right just like how you saw in this short story and he did all this to do what he loved which was art which…

A term has been coined to describe the regime in North Korea is ubuesque. The word means grotesque and bloody. If The Aquariums of Pyongyang is anything to go by, the word is well-coined. What is more grotesque and bloody than making concent-ration camp detainees, some as young as 15, watch and participate in frequent executions? Or young children being brutalized by “teachers” in what passes for “school” at the camp. Or children dying in accidental cave-ins as they’re forced to work without protective gear in underground mines. And when you realize that these children are sent to the camps with their parents and other family members, none of whom had committed any real crime, your outrage is extended. Most of these children do not survive because of malnutrition, brutality, and exposure to the extreme winters but, those who miraculously survive transform into savages, quick to steal any bit of food from the guards to supplement their near-starvation rations or trap a rat to add some protein to their diet. Chol-hwan Kang's memoir of his childhood in North Korea is riveting, heartbreaking, and one of those books that one must read in order to understand well the unknown prisons that continue to creep in the worlds society.…

People fear change. People fear persecution. In the play The Crucible fear is used ridiculously to persecute the innocent and save ones self. Salem, a puritan community, had god and religion as its number one priority. Therefore the devil was the people of Salem's greatest fear. In he United States during the cold war, people feared communism. Here came the creation of McCarthyism, this is almost identical to the events of Salem, people were accused in the United States of being communist sympathizers, usually without much evidence, and people were persecuted. Arthur miller himself was accused of being a communist supporter and charged after his writing of The Crucible. Even more recently terrorism is the world's greatest fear, and therefore people are persecuted, not in a court of law but in society. These people are discriminated against due to race or culture without any evidence that they are terrorists or murderers. This strongly links to the major themes in the play.…

Tim O'Connell is a senior manager at Driscoll Software, gets a call a week before Christmas from “Hybara Casinos”. Their new cheapo system has crashed, and the company wants the problem fixed in time to make a clean start in the New Year's Day. The project will generate much-needed revenue, but it involves six weeks' worth of work but it should be done into two - and over the holidays. Tim's main programmer Alessandra Sandoval, left the company, and the rookie Kristen Hammersmith has taken her place as a team leader. Tim is deeply concerned about handing a project over to a rookie Kristen-especially a rookie who hasn’t shown any ability. But bringing Alessandra to the team would mean swallowing his pride front of his superiors at Driscoll. Should Tim take a chance on his rookie Kristen or contract the project out to Alessandra? Three commentators offer expert advice in this case study. Michael Schrage, a researcher at MIT Sloan School of Management's Center for Digital Business says that Tim should hire Alessandra immediately. Because, she knows Hybara’s team and systems better than anyone within the company. And also, she is fluent in Spanish so this challenge best fits to Alessandra’s strength and flexibility. Kristen is in over her head. But more important, Tim is a shockingly poor manager and yet unprofessional. He is not doing his job because successful leaders know that their actions speak louder than their words. Carol A. Walker, the founder and principal of the consulting firm prepared to lead, agrees with Michael Schrage that Tim isn’t doing his job.
