What American Literature Must Contain What is considered American Literature? American Literature should be anything that directly or indirectly pertains to the exploring of America, the people of America, or the founding of America. Since America is referred to as the great melting pot, the country where a certain person comes from should not influence whether or not their writing should be considered American Literature. So far this year all the pieces that we have read should be considered American Literature. Christopher Columbus and Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca Literature should be considered American Literature even though they are not directly connected with America. Columbus paves the way for other explorers that are searching for America. Even though Columbus never steps foot on the mainland, his determination in searching sends other explorers in the direction of America. Cabeza de Vaca explores the mainland and shows that it is possible to live with the Native Americans in peace. Both Columus’ and Cabeza de Vaca’s expeditions show how the Native Americans will be treated in the future. Although Columbus and Cabeza de Vaca have different opinions on the treatment of Native Americans, both pieces of their literature show the beginning of violent treatment toward the Indians. Native American Literature should be considered the first pieces of American Literature. The Native Americans were the first people in America and their stories go back to the beginning of time. This can be compared with the creation story being one of the most important stories in the Christian faith. In the genre of American Literature, Native American Literature should be considered one of the most important pieces. Native American Literature gives us a history of the traditions, customs, and the beliefs of the Native Americans. This is important for us to read so we understand their beliefs and way of living.
