To Build A Fire in the dog's point of view
I wish we could have stayed inside where it was warm. I've been walking with the man for a long time and I'm cold, tired and hungry. I don't want to walk anymore, but he won't stop. I do not like the man. He is mean to me and yells at me constantly.

My insides hurt. I follow the man walking along in the cold. I do not want to go, but he makes me follow him. I wish he could feel what I feel; even my fur hurts. He is going to where the other food and fire providers are, and I really want to make it there soon, for I am very hungry and cold. He makes me run ahead of him and I fall into the water. When I get back up, the water is hard in my fur and toes. I can't let the hard water stay between my toes, so I bite them to remove the hard water, and start walking again.

I wish I could see the big, bright, warm circle in the sky, but it is not anywhere to be seen. I was warm when the man was with the other man, but I don't know what they were saying, I don't speak human. We have been walking for a long time, and I am tired. The man just fell down. Finally, it was him instead of me. Maybe, now, he'll know how I feel. But, the man rises up again, and tries to make a fire with the fire sticks. I am happy because it will make me warm. The man sits to get warm, but the white stuff on the trees falls and the fire goes out.

Now he tries to make another fire with the fire sticks, but the man can't hold them, and they fall without fire. The man looks at me and speaks nicely to me. Something is wrong; he is never nice to me. He grabs me and holds my body tightly, and I must get away from him or I may get hurt. But the man let me go because his paws don't work. So I look for the man, who has started running very fast, and I run to keep up with him. The man falls again. I think he's scared. But he slowly gets upright and runs again. Then he falls again, but doesn't get up. Why won't the man get up? Is he asleep? Is he hurt? Is he dead?

I walk to where the man is sitting, but

The first sign of danger is his crackling spit. When the man spits it crackles before it ever hits the ground (London, 610). The man knows what temperature this indicates and realizes the danger “But the temperature did not matter. He was bound for the old claim… where the boys were” (610). This ironically foreshadows the man’s death because he is blinded by his arrogance and thinks he can go fast enough to make it to camp. The man also ignores the warnings from his dog. When the man stops to build a fire, the dog cuddles down a takes in the warmth, but when the man is ready to leave “the dog was disappointed and yearned back toward the fire. This man did not know the cold” (613). This dog is a husky, native to Alaska, who knows the dangers of the cold much better than the man does, but the man ignores his dog and tries to keep going. The contrast between the man and the dog displays the stubbornness of the man and his disrespect for nature. The dog has endured the cold all throughout his ancestry, but the man has no experience with this weather so he ignores it even though it will be his undoing. The man also ignores the experienced Alaskan men. Before starting his expedition the man got advice from an old-timer who said “If he had a trail mate he would have been in no danger” (616). This the most obvious and simple warning the man ignores. The man feels that the old-timer is…

The grating cold and bleak surroundings “made no impression on the man” (6) while the dog became “depressed by the tremendous cold” (7), painting the man as a figure unaffected by the severe conditions, immortal and daunting. He viewed the conditions as “cold and uncomfortable, and that was all” (6), which gave him a tough aspect of character, showing the ultimate power and force of nature over man, no matter how fortifying and strong he may be. These characteristics illustrates a contrast between the state of mankind and the state of nature. The animal also provides a comparison of the ignorance of humans’ instinct in comparison to the animal who understands the ferocity of nature. Allowing the environment to kill the man indicates that he is weak both mentally and biologically, while on the other hand the dog is stronger by surviving the same harsh surroundings of the brutal Yukon. “The brute had its instinct” (7) and “its instinct told it a truer tale than was told to the man” (7), because the man was “not much given to thinking”, displaying his obvious ignorance about the ways of nature and how the animal’s instincts trumped his own. Although the man was “keenly observant” (8), he was woefully inept at survival and despite the man’s tough aspects of character, his utter ignorance and over-confidence in himself led to his demise and allowed nature to shape his grisly…

As I sit down on a rock and enjoy a can of refried beans I see something in the distance struggling in the water. Standing up to get a better look I am able to make out a cow about to drown. Ignoring how cold the water is I begin to swim over the cow and try to rescue him. However, the waves were as strong as a bull and kept throwing me down. Comet must have noticed me struggling and jumped into the water to help out, because the next thing I know I was sitting on the side of the stream with two freezing cold animals lying next to…

His feet, face, and hands practically frozen, the man is unfortunate in his last attempt of fire. He states, “The old man on Sulphur Creek was right…After 50 below zero, a man should travel with a companion.” Coming to his senses of regret of not acknowledging what the old man warned him about, he becomes bargaining due to the desperateness. He thought about killing the wolf dog and sheltering himself inside the dead body. To do so he would need to use his hands, which unfortunately was not operational. At this point of his condition, the man accepts his danger and foolishness. He feels fear and death as he tries to run to camp, even though the old man warned him about running with frozen feet. His desperateness overcame his ego, pride, denial, and anger. He was hopeless and accepted his death. Before his last breath he said to himself, “You were right, old fellow. You were…

When I get to the shack, I can feel the cold frost on the lock. I grab the handle of the door and enter my shack, smelling a sweet smell of burnt wood. I start getting the fire lit; I feel the heat of the fire on my cold hands. While I’m feeding the fire small kindle and bigger pieces of wood; I open the blinds on the window and get my pole and grubs and get ready to fish. I can hear the crackling of the wood as it is burning; I then throw a couple thicker pieces of wood in the stove. I sit down; drop my jig down with a wax worm. I turn on my Aqua Vu fish TV and angle it towards my jig. As I am fishing, I tend to hear the ice cracking. I then hold my pole and jig it up and down slowly, and watch the TV. I see the fish on the TV; it helps so much with catching fish. After the fish die down and aren’t biting as much, I made some brats, the brats tasted great. As dark approaches the fish don’t bite as much, so I had let the fire die down. I hung my pole up and proceeded to pack up my gear, and close the wooden door covering the holes. I shut the blinds and check the fire one last time before I leave. I grab the handle of the door and opened, feeling the brisk cold air rushing into the shack. I can feel the freezing temperature of the lock. I then left on the makeshift ice road to the…

I looked around and observed the ground beneath my feet. The atmosphere crawled with a moisture that slapped my clothes with water from the trees above. When my confusion came to an end, I decided to go for a hike. Honestly, I hoped to find the woman from the previous night, so that she could give the questions I was dying to rid myself of, an answer. Trying to find a woman in an intense forest felt like trying to find the right receipt in a purse consisting of countless useless items. I never found the woman, but I'd found something that was far worse. A human. It sounds bizarre to say that when a man stepped within 1,000 feet of me I could instantaneously feel a hunger for new skin, and a crucial need to run. Running seemed to be a breeze:…

I am not sure that I believe that she was a heroine. I feel this way because through much of the story she acts like things do not pertain to her. She says on more than one occasion “I have no taxes in Jefferson (Faulkner 218).” She also poisoned her love interest. The drug store associate said “But the law requires you to tell what you are going to use it for (Faulkner 221).” She told them after blankly staring for a few moments that it was for rats. Although, I believe her biggest antagonist was the people in the town around her. They all knew that she was odd and yet everyone would stare and talk about her.…
