My Horse Gate-Personal Narrative
As I walk home from school I can feel winter approaching on the small town of Georgetown, Colorado. As I approach my house I watch the the snow slowly begin to fall from the sky and the squirrels collecting their last nuts before winter puts them into their cozy trees. As I walk into the house I am instantly met with the smell of marijuana and whiskey. As I close the door behind my mother slowly arises and gives me the instant look of disapproval. My mother and I never get along very well but I never knew that today would be the last day I step foot into this house filled of disapproval and addiction. Walking out the back door with my luggage in one hand and a box of refried beans in the other I make my way over to my sidekick for the upcoming journey. My horse Comet has been my best friend for as long as I can remember. Whenever I can't deal with my family he always seems to have a way to make me feel better. "Comet." I said "The snow is starting to pick up, please be careful I can't imagine loosing you." I suddenly thought to myself I must be going insane. I'm out in the middle of the woods talking to a horse that probably can't even understand me, much less be able to respond to me. …show more content…
As I sit down on a rock and enjoy a can of refried beans I see something in the distance struggling in the water. Standing up to get a better look I am able to make out a cow about to drown. Ignoring how cold the water is I begin to swim over the cow and try to rescue him. However, the waves were as strong as a bull and kept throwing me down. Comet must have noticed me struggling and jumped into the water to help out, because the next thing I know I was sitting on the side of the stream with two freezing cold animals lying next to

Stanford and University of California alumni Sandra Lim reads from The Wilderness on April 7, 2015, at Prairie Lights. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. The poems are open to many interpretations but that is the way that I chose to interpret that poetry in particular. The interesting thing about Lim’s poem is how describes the body parts in some of her poems. It is very vague. It almost makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time, I really like her style. The way she describes…

Most people do not understand what it is like to get ridiculed for something that you love. When someone works hard to fit in with a certain crowd, but not accepted because they are not as good as others it can have a negative or positive impact. If someone were to take the criticism negatively, it may cause them to give up and no longer try. On the other hand, positive impacts may encourage someone to work hard to become exceptional. Working hard to become better at something is not easy, but the benefits can be tremendous. I personally have encountered this struggle.…

I used to love reading. In kinder and first, my nose was stuck in a Magic Tree House book. Third, fourth, and fifth grade I basically lived at Hogwarts (in my rightfully sorted house, of course, I am a proud Hufflepuff). And in middle school, I discovered THE tween series of my generation, Maximum Ride. Reading was exciting, and even though I had done it for years every time I picked up a book it felt so novel. I was your ordinary bookworm until seventh grade when the joint power of Ms. Green’s teaching and James Patterson’s writing broke my will to read.…

The dining area of Rocking Horse Ranch was always hot and crowded during meal times, where the tired, overworked servers would bustle around attempting to provide excellent customer service for each and every inane request from the guests. I’ve heard that loud, hectic, quick-paced atmospheres filled with pretentious parents and scrambling children are almost calming sometimes. This atmosphere never brought me serenity; it gave me anxiety and stressed me out. Just the thought of sweeping melted ice cream cones off of the stained carpet and dry mopping the tiles floors gives me nightmares.…

There has been many cases in which I have helped an outsider feel welcome. One time in particular is when I played tag with this little boy at church since he was new and no one else played with him. Originally, I was outside eating candy and talking to my friends at church. I noticed that this little boy was standing all alone watching all the other little kids play without him. I thought that maybe he was upset so I went over to him and asked if he wanted the rest of my gummy worms. He seemed nervous at first, but eventually he started talking to me. I learned that he was five years old and he was visiting his grandparents for the weekend. His older brother was outside playing basketball with some of the other older boys at the church, and…
