Due to the cold night, the fire truck would not start and a group of men had to push it to the burning house. This was not the town’s only problem. The water hose burst, trying to put out the fire. On account of good faith, two fire engines came from neighboring towns. Eye witnesses stated “this was the worst fire this town has ever seen in many years.” Luckily, no one was hurt in the attempt to put out the fire. As the investigation is still underway, they suspect the fire began in the kitchen. Miss. Maudie stated “I left the fire going to keep my potted plants warm for the night. Thank god everyone was there to save most of my furniture.”
