Ms. Jean Louis, her brother and Dill were walking home. When asked what they were doing, they stated “we were looking for things to shoot with our air rifles. As we were walking down the street we saw Tim Johnson looking crazy mad.” According to witnesses he did not look well. The children ran home to tell Calpurnia. When they told her what was going on, she got on the phone and told the operator, “Tell everyone to stay inside and lock the doors.” Heck Tate and Atticus Finch drove to the house to see what was going on. According to Heck, the dog could barely walk. Jean Louis stated “I have never seen Atticus shoot a gun, because of his blind eye. I had not known when Atticus was younger; his nickname was ‘one shot
Finch’.” Tim Johnson was shot and everyone was thankful.
Fire Destroys Beloved House
Miss. Maudie Atkinson is a member of Maycomb County. She had a lovely house with an abundance of flowers. On an extremely cold and windy night, Miss Maudie’s house caught fire. Everyone was unaware of what had happened and tried to put the fire out as quickly as possible, so other houses would not have the same fate. Due to the cold night, the fire truck would not start and a group of men had to push it to the burning house. This was not the town’s only problem. The water hose burst, trying to put out the fire. On account of good faith, two fire engines came from neighboring towns. Eye witnesses stated “this was the worst fire this town has ever seen in many years.” Luckily, no one was hurt in the attempt to put out the fire. As the investigation is still underway, they suspect the fire began in the kitchen. Miss. Maudie stated “I left the fire going to keep my potted plants warm for the night. Thank god everyone was there to save most of my furniture.”
