Many, such as Mr. Dolphus Raymond (a character in To Kill A Mockingbird,), argued that Mr. Gilmer was simply doing his job as a lawyer. However, the wordings of his cross examinations say otherwise. One example of this is when Mr. Gilmer calls Tom Robinson boy: ““Are you being impudent to me, boy?” “No suh, I didn’t go to be.”” (Lee 265). Calling Tom Robinson a ‘boy,’ though simply swapping pronouns, shows Mr. Gilmer thinks that Tom is inferior to him. Although the pronoun ‘boy’ was a normal for use on black people in this time period, Mr. Gilmer only used ‘boy’ because it shows little respect.
