Although Mayella win the case due to her race, her class held her down. “Maycomb’s Ewells lived behind the town dump in what was once
a negro cabin (Doc A.)” Who is going to believe a poor woman who’s father is the town drunk. “White people wouldn’t have anything to do with her because she lived among pigs (Doc E.)” meant that because of her class people didn’t want to mess around with her. “Long as he keep callin me ma’am and sayin’ Miss Mayella. I don’t haftha take his sass. I ain’t called upon to take it (Doc C.) shows that she is not used to people using her name respectfully, that’s why she believes she’s being mocked. For a white citizen, Mayella lacks power of class, she’s the all time low.
Along with lacking power because of her class, she also lacks power because of her gender. “Except when he’s drinking?” asked Atticus so gently that Mayella nodded. (Doc B.) shows that because of her gender, Bob Ewell, her father sexually abuses and she has no way to protect herself. “She says what her papa do to her don’t count (Doc B.)” shows that her father does abuse her and she doesn’t take much consideration of what he does. “Mayella Ewell was beaten savagely by someone who led almost exclusively with his left(Doc B)” shows that Bob, in addition of sexually abusing her, he also harms her physically. Mayella would be completely powerless if it she wasn’t white.
Although there are many factors that show that Mayella is powerless she has one factor that makes her really powerful, her race helps her because it’s a guarantee win since she’s going against a black man. “Well, Dill, after all he’s just a negro.(Doc C.)” says that most citizens of Maycomb are racist to blacks and that they don’t care of the existence of black people. “I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a whiteman (Doc D.)”that not only the people of Maycomb, but the jury, the court and the entire justice system is racist to black people. “I felt right sorry for her(Doc E.)” shows that even though tom is showing a sense of humanity in the courtroom, the white people use this against him showing that the court room not being fair.
Since Mayella’s class and gender is in a very bad state it is holding her down a bit and making her powerless in the courtroom. Mayella is powerful because she is white, most of the entire town in racist so this gives her an unfair advantage. The result from her power to Tom’s is that she is a white woman and Tom is a black male.
