To Kill a Mockingbird
“We are a democracy. That’s the difference between America and Germany.
We are a democracy and Germany is a dictatorship. Over here we don’t believe in persecuting anybody.” (Lee pg 328).
People think they are different because they are afraid to admit they are not. Miss
Caroline says America is very different from Germany. She says that the Jews are good people, and the Germans are persecuting them for no reason. This is no different than what the whites are doing to the black members of the community, especially Tom Robinson. The truth is, the same dictatorship is going on in America; the whites are ruling the blacks. It’s not really a democracy in America, only the wealthy white males who own land are allowed to vote. When Miss Caroline describes democracy, she describes it as ‘us’, but ‘us’ only includes everyone who is not a female, under aged or part of the white population. Basically, half the people that inhabit America are not included in ‘us’ or in democracy. America is not as united and democratic as suggested, but only some people in Maycomb can see that, such as the Finch family. Miss Caroline doesn’t see how the case against Tom Robinson is exactly like the situation in Germany. During the Tom Robinson case, everyone felt that he was guilty and there was not even a possibility of his innocence, just because he was a black man. They are treating the blacks like Hitler treats the Jews; they just do not want to admit it.
Miss Caroline is being prejudiced, but Scout sees right through her. Children see truths to which adults have long been blinded, that is why Scout was able to see that there was something very wrong about what Miss Caroline was implying about the difference between
America and Germany. To her, democracy means “equals rights for all, special privileges for none” (Lee 328). This contradicts what she sees around the town on a daily basis; because

Black people had to live in one of the poorest counties and didn’t make a lot of money and they owned their own homes and didn’t want to leave. But white people spread chemicals in the area of Warren and black people had no choice but to stay because of their homes. People can’t survive in those types of chemicals for long. In the article, “What is Environmental Racism?” It stated, “Particularly those with large concentrations of melanin in their skin.. who are suffering more.” Melanin are people of color and the people of color have been getting treated bad in their environment. People with no color or the white people get treated with respect, love while black people get dumped on with negativity. It doesn’t have to be that way, we were all born equal and with the same…

Although the United States government promises its people that they live in a true democratic country, the United States is definitely not a democracy. A democracy by definition is “the government by people.” However, the United States looks as if it is a constitutional republic, rather than democracy. A constitutional republic is “a state in which the head of state or officials are representatives of the people.” The United States is a country run by the government officials, not the people, the government is taking away the rights that the U.S. Constitution promises its people, and not all citizens are treated equally or given the same rights. Therefore, the United States is far from a democracy at this time.…

The United States is said to be and has the properties of a democracy. A democracy is defined as a government in which the people decide matters directly through town hall meetings or voting on a ballot box. There have been a few major laws passed that have been passed by Supreme Court in which the people didn’t have a vote or consent on the law. Two examples of this are legalizing gay marriage and gun laws. The United States has also in a way turned into an oligarchy. It has come to where the rich are starting to rule the country. If the U.S was truly a democracy the government would look to all of the people for their vote and consent on a law, and their should be equality between the first, middle, and lower class people.…

A lot has happened over the past few months. You absolutely would not believe what happened today. You remember me telling you about that negro, James Meredith, who was trying to get admitted into the University of Mississippi around the end of May of last year? Well, rather than letting it go and forgetting about it like he should have, he decided to get the NAACP involved. Apparently they appealed his case all the way up to the Supreme Court and they ruled that the University had no choice but to allow him to enroll here as a student. We thought that was the end of it and we would be forced to go to school with a negro. However, the Governor of this great state of Mississippi, Ross Barnett, tried to block him by having the Legislature pass a law that prohibited any person who was convicted of a state crime from admission to a state school. This law applied to Meredith because he had been convicted of false voter registration.…
