Atticus (in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee) is one of my favorite father figures in literary history (the character is believed to have been based on author's father). Atticus is a strong, fully developed character, who is willing to risk his life and his career in the pursuit of justice. He represents an important role model for Scout. In standing up for what he believes in, he demonstrates how important it is to sacrifice everything in the search for the truth (and not to be afraid of what you might find along the way)."You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." - spoken by Atticus Finch, written by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Discussion: This quote is one of my favorites (not just in the novel, but of all time)! Atticus gives this simple piece of advice to Scout, when she has had a hard day at school (and never wants to return). "The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience." - spoken by Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbirdv
Discussion: There are some things--in life and in society--that we can't do anything about (or so it often seems). They may be determined by majority opinion, or by representative vote. "There's a lot of ugly things in this world, son. I wish I could keep 'em all away from you. That's never possible." - spoken by Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Discussion: When I first read this novel, I imagined it must be troubling to look at one's children, and know that their innocence would someday be lost. But, this quote means something very different to me--now that I'm a parent. I can identify the moments when my oldest son asked why there are "bad people." As Atticus told us long ago, I wish I could prevent the loss of innocence. I wish I could hide the ugliness, but as he says: "That's never possible." "Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." - spoken by Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Discussion: How do you define courage? Who do you identify as a courageous person (other than Atticus) in life or literature? Do you agree or disagree with this definition of courage? "When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness sake. But don't make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion faster than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em." - spoken by Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Discussion: Here's a perfect example of his philosophy (as it relates to children). Instead of the oft-heard quote about children best being "seen and not heard," Atticus sees, hears and responds. He validates their questions and concerns, demonstrating that he cares about what they think and who they are. "Bad language is a stage all children go through, and it dies with time when they learn they're not attracting attention with it."
- spoken by Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Discussion: This statement is one of those quotes that some parents will debate on. David O. McKay offers a number of tactics for curbing the use of swear words (with a religious slant). Combating the use of inappropriate language is something that likely becomes part of any relationship between a parent and child. As a statement from Atticus, the quote is an example of how he views parenting/child rearing. "Best way to clear the air is to have it all out in the open." - spoken by Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Discussion: Atticus is an advocate for truth and justice. He believes strongly in standing up for what he believes in, even when it puts his own life at risk. In this way, he's shedding light on the truth, bringing all that's hidden or confused into the open. "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs Dubose won, all ninety-eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew." - spoken by Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird Study Guide

Mill begins his essay by expressing a concern with the amount of control that society can exert over an individual 's liberty. Mill is afraid of the "the tyranny of the majority"1 and suggests that one should protect himself not only from the tyranny of the state itself, but also from the prevailing opinions of the majority. He says that the opinions of the majority become the rules and laws…

Steve Jobs once said, “Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life...have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” By this, he means: don't let the voices and beliefs of others overrule yours, but instead follow your own intuition. This is exactly what Atticus teaches his children in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In the novel, Atticus shows his children that even though everyone may be against your belief or stand on something, continue to think for yourself even though others may disagree.…

Atticus’s brother, Uncle Jack, came to visit and he was talking about they way that Atticus treats his children. “When a child asks you something, answer him for goodness’ sake. But don’t make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults…” (Lee 87). Mr. Finch perceives his two kin how he believes they should be. Before the case of Tom Robinson Atticus tells Scout that over the summer, she has a lot coming. He was talking about the trial. Next, Scout asks him why he is supporting Tom if the rest of Maycomb County thinks that it is wrong. He replies saying that it all comes down to your own credence. “ ‘Well, most folks seem to think they’re right and you’re wrong….’ ‘They’re certainly entitled to think that, and they’re entitled to full respect for their opinions,’ said Atticus, “But before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience” (Lee 105). This quote is a really powerful illustration of how he thinks that everyone matters, also that standing up for your opinion is the correct thing to do.…

In Harper Lee’s story of To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout tells of her real life happenings. Scout tells a story of a black man, Tom Robinson, who people accuse of raping Mayella Ewell. Not only Tom receives accusations, but another case reveals that Emmett Till continues touching a woman’s hand and saying provocative things to her. The people accuse Tom and Emmett of similar things and the jury proclaims them guilty as a result of them possessing black features. The misjudging occurrences and accusations the town makes against racism and the absurd outcomes, prove the jury wrong.…

Prejudice is a foggy window which we all look out of. It impairs not only sight, but our thoughts and actions. When looking through the window, not everyone can see past the fog. Sometimes, we see people with differences; they are what we may not want them to be; whether it be because of color or sex, race or religion. Tom Robinson, a black man, is accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell, and is brought to trial. The townspeople of Maycomb believe in Tom’s guilt whereas Atticus and his children believe likewise. There are distinct views concerning Robinson’s innocence- views influenced by prejudice in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. When people rely on prejudice to create authority, they are blinded by ignorance.…

In Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch shows many reasons as to why he is an excellent father. Atticus serves not only as a dad to his children, but also a teacher and a friend. Everyone makes judgments about others, there is no way around it, what a person should work on though is not to “snap” judge other people. To Kill a Mockingbird by Haper Lee demonstrates how being quick to judge is wrong. To Kill a Mockingbird is globally known, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and selling over fifteen million copies. To Kill a Mockingbird shows how judging a person before you get to know them generates a hateful, prejudice environment based on false pretenses.…

A world where women didn’t receive equal pay for the same work, couldn’t apply to the same colleges, or have equal job opportunities as a man, or even serve in the military (except in nursing positions) is an idea completely unthinkable to many citizens of the United States today. Although a society where these restrictions are customary is immoral and oppressive, before the 1930s, it was widely accepted. In the late 1920s and early 1930s many women began to make a strong effort to gain rights in The United States of America. Because of the efforts of these women, during the 1930s women began to receive more rights. This trend continued as women’s roles in society became greater and more important over time and up to this day. The women who stood up for their rights in the 1930s have significantly affected the rights and responsibilities that women have in modern times in the United States. The rights that women had in the 1930s are shown in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird by the prejudices and expectations of women in Maycomb, Alabama.…

Mankind’s history of burial practices and funeral customs are as old as civilization itself. There is no specific way to planning a funeral. Every civilization and culture has provided for their dead in different ways. Religion and personal beliefs play an important role in the burial practices and funeral customs of a given culture or civilization. Furthermore, each civilization and cultured ever studied have three things in common: some type of funeral rites, rituals, and ceremonies; A sacred place for the dead; and memorialization of the dead. As far back as the time of Christ, burials have been noted to take place. In time burial and funeral customs have become very distinct, interesting and expensive. In post-industrial America, along with the rest of the western societies, grave burials are the most common method of disposal. However, cremation, although popular in many countries, is still very unpopular in western societies. As I found in my research, funerals can be expensive. Planning a funeral is no easy thing, though we know is the only part of life that is certain, many individuals are far from thinking about what casket to choose. This was truly an experience I will never forget.…
