MAYCOMB-Yesterday on the coldest night in Maycomb county, residents awoke to the house fire of Miss.Maudie Atkinson, which is believed to have been caused by a flue in the kitchen. Neighbours and fire fighters tried in vain, to salvage the already crumbling home. Maycomb’s fire truck had to be pushed to the fire, only to prove useless as the hose popped when connected with the hydrant. When a fire truck from Abbotsford finally arrived, it was able to extinguish the flames of a nearby home that had caught the fire, however, Atkinson’s home was demolished beyond repair by then. Another fire truck, travelled sixty miles from Clark`s Ferry but was not useful as there was only one hydrant which was already occupied. Fortunately, the only losses resulting from the fire were personal possessions and not any lives. However, a man named Mr.Avery was injured while helping Atkinson retrieve some belongings before the home collapsed. Avery got stuck in

At Valley Forge there were harsh and unbearable conditions. In the words of Dr. Albigence Waldo, I was “sick and discontented” and “smoak’d out my senses.” The weather was frigid, and the huts were built with very poor ventilation so anytime we built a fire to keep warm, the smoke would stay in our huts.…

Two law students, Charles Kremer and Elias Kanter attempted to help the stranded victims.“Kanter and the other students dragged two short ladders to the roof of the law school” they made an extension, by connecting the two shorter ladders together and “Kremer got down on to the roof of the burning building and tried to get the girls… and send them up the ladder” to safety.[4] By using this technique, these students managed to save 150 workers away from the fire. By the end of the fire, one hundred and forty-eight workers died, though one hundred and forty-one of them were instantly killed from: “leaps from the windows and down elevator shafts, or by being smothered. Seven died in the…

“To Build a Fire” is a naturalist’s view of the harsh peril that the Yukon can hold. The characters were all in the Yukon and each had different fates due to the willingness to accept the rules of such a harsh climate. The tone and mood help set up such a naturalistic story where one should not trifle with nature. Throughout the story the main character fights himself and the elements to try to survive. “To Build a Fire” by Jack London shows how the dismissal of knowledge and experience due to self-confidence creates arrogance.…

AGNER DODGE WAS facing the moment, the decision of a lifetime. A fast-moving forestand-grass fire was about to overrun him and the fifteen firefighters under his command. Less than two hours earlier they had sky-jumped into a fiery gulch in Montana. Now an enormous wall of flame was racing at them up the tinder-dry ravine. They knew they were running for their lives, and Dodge knew their time was running out. Dodge's mind, still remarkably in control, was also concluding that he and his men had almost reached a point of no exit. He estimated that in a mere ninety seconds the conflagration would overtake him and the crew. If he could still discover a way out or invent some…

Plaag notes that, “for starters, bitterly cold days tend to produce two factors that contribute to fires in widen structures: incredibly dry air (which literally sucks the moisture out of wooden frame buildings, causing the settling and shifting that is often reported in winter months) and people huddled inside – often too closely– around highly stoked fires and candle light, adding to the risk of accidental fire” (282). It was reported in the court documents that they could not necessarily pin the fires on a slave. It is for this very reason Plaag mentioned. The slaves could not have caused a fire that occurred because of the old wood and the weather. The slaves were not the cause of the fires and it supports that the fires, what the slaves were conspired to have planned and carried through was not done by them at all.…

This winter is the worst I have ever witnessed. We have set up fires in our huts in an attempt to stay warm and avoid freezing to death, but it has not worked out so well. In fact it might have actually made the situation slightly worse. Since the cabins do not have good ventilation all the smoke from the fire stays inside, making it hard for us to even breathe. (Document C) It is freezing outside. The weather, more often than not, stays below zero! Many soldiers have been losing their limbs due to frostbite. (Document B) I rather be at…

Bradbury writes, “The wind blew. A failing tree bough crashed through the kitchen window. Cleaning solvent, bottled, shattered over the stove. The room was ablaze in an instant! "Fire!" screamed a voice. The house lights flashed, water pumps shot water from the ceilings. But the solvent spread on the linoleum, licking, eating, under the kitchen door, while the voices took it up in chorus: "Fire, fire, fire!” (Bradbury 3). The author uses symbolism in describing the fire. Not only is the fire destroying the house, but it is also gigantic and is spreading quickly. This fire is used to symbolize the downfall of man. The author also personifies the fire. The solvent that caught fire and caused it to spread quickly was described as “licking”, and “eating” further personifying the fire. The house tries to stop the spread of the fire by spraying a chemical. The house yells “Fire, fire, fire!” because it “feels” as though it is threatened by the fire. The house and fire are personified as being enemies in a constant…

The fire was around a small barn belonging to the O'Leary family that surrounded an alley behind a street called Dekoven Street. The first building to be consumed by the fire was the shed next to the barn, but many city officials never determined the exact cause of the fire. Over the years there were speculations. The most popular speculation was Mrs. O’Leary’s cow; therefore, others suspect that a group of men were gambling inside the barn and knocked over a lantern. There were still others that suggested that the fire connected to other fires in the area that day.…
