The American revolution was a turning point in history because it was a great unshackle, not just for the colonists but for all of mankind. The revolution made a firm commitment to the principle of being a nation of laws, and not of men. This radical commitment to govern with equality and transparent laws was a bold idea that would serve to solidify America as “a beacon on the summit of the mountain, to which all the inhabitants of the earth may turn their eyes for a marvelous and saving light, till time shall be lost in eternity, and this globe itself dissolve, nor leave a wreck behind”. (Adams 1821) The idea that citizens have the duty and the right to overthrow the shackles of their oppressive government when it has abdicated its role as guardian of their God given rights was so profound that the same principles are nearly considered the standard for countries all over the world. America is a country of perpetual revolution. With each reassertion of our founding principles, there is another revolution in the minds of the people and a great period of social upheaval follows. America's independence, the Civil War, the Civil Rights Era, and women’s rights, were all periods in which America was forced to reaffirm its founding principles and go through periods of harsh change.
