Toastmasters is an international leadership and development network helping individuals become better public speakers and leaders. The website claims to have 280,000 members with 13,500 separate clubs in 116 countries (Toastmasters International, 2013). The membership cost to join a Toastmasters club is thirty-six dollars every six months plus any individual club dues. Toastmasters was founded in 1924 heighten self-confidence, improve speaking skills, improve leadership skills, and improve communication (Toastmasters International, 2013).
I was a little nervous attending my first ever Toastmasters meeting. I was unsure what to expect once I walked into the meeting in the Presbyterian Church in Bluffton, South Carolina. I was, however, relieved to find a club in the city where I am currently living. I was assuming I would have to drive a half-hour to Savannah. I found the club’s president’s email on the toastmasters website and decided to email him before I went to observe the meeting. He was very nice and happy to have me come observe a meeting. But, that did not take away the butterflies in my stomach walking into my first Toastmaster’s meeting.
Luckily, everyone was very nice a polite. They were inviting and happy to have me observe a typical meeting. The meeting was 60 minutes. It ran from 6:30-7:30. There were two long tables parallel to each other and a small table at the end connecting the two. There were seats placed all along the tables. The president stood at the head of one of the long tables. There was a small tabletop podium on the head of one table that the president stood behind. Many of the members were long-time members and others were new members. There was a mix of experienced members and less-experienced member, but they all seemed to be comfortable in this setting.
