In the movie Saving Private Ryan, American soldier private James Ryan losses all three of his brothers during World War Two. The Marshall, not wanting to allow a mother to lose all four of her sons gives orders to send a unit to find and rescue private Ryan, despite the possibility of letting many men die to save one mans life. In order to gain his staff's support for this decision the Marshall reads them a letter written by Abraham Lincoln to a mother who lost five sons during the civil war which contains various rhetorical techniques such as: ethos, allusions, as well as pathos coupled with powerful diction. Through these rhetorical techniques this letter is able to make a strong emotional impact on any viewers which is used by the Marshall as a tool of persuasion to effectively gain the support of his staff.…
The author uses Samneric to symbolize the innocence still left in the boys after being isolated from society for so long. Samneric quote, “Hullo, fancy meeting you Ralph. We just been in the forest- to get wood for the fire- we got lost that night. (158)” Samneric are ashamed of being present at the fire the night before and will not accept the fact that they murdered Simon.…
Captain John Yossarian possesses this aggressiveness, lack of morality, and courage characteristic of anti-hero, stemming from a desire to stay alive as long as possible. Major Sanderson diagnoses Yossarian, saying, “‘You have a morbid aversion to dying... You have deep-seated survival anxieties… It wouldn’t surprise me if you’re a manic-depressive!’” (Heller 303). This quote is important because it tells the reader why Yossarian is so aggressive and dishonest; he will do whatever it takes to stay alive. Clevinger also explains Yossarian’s behavior: “...a homicidal impulse to machine-gun strangers, retrospective falsification, and an unfounded suspicion that people hated him and were conspiring to kill him” (Heller 20). Along with this quote,…

Most Americans these days are scared to watch war movies and some prefer to not watch them at all. However, wars are a part of our freedom as Americans and we should not be as afraid to watch them. “Saving Private Ryan” is a great movie to start with and should show everyone how lucky we really are as Americans. It’s a story designed in a WW2 setting and starts out on the famous Omaha Beach. It’s about a man named Captain John Miller(Tom Hanks) and his squad who are trying to save a man who they call Private Ryan. “Civilization begins with order, grows with liberty, and dies with chaos.” This quote is by Will Durant, it relates to how Ralph tries to keep all the boys civil. In the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the kids try to maintain civilization by using the conch, but as the book progresses, Jack and his tribe rebel. By rebelling, they become savage because there are no rules or orders. With no rules or orders, it is hard to sustain a civil society. When the kids use the conch they stay civilized, but as the story evolves, they began disrespecting the conch, and start becoming savage as a result. In the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the children use the conch to call order, gain leadership, and remain civil, reflecting the idea that to keep civilization there must be rules.…
Steven Spielberg has a fantastic way of making the viewer feel a wide array of emotions throughout his works and this one doesn’t differ with an incredibly war drama that really portrays parts of war and the emotions that are really carried with the serving men. Saving Private Ryan is the fantastic story following through the eyes Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) beginning with the invasion of Omaha beach on June 6, 1944 World War II. Omaha beach was a heavily fortified beach with Nazi German defense off the coasts of Normandy, France where the movie truly captures the sheer brutality and gruesomeness of war.…
What is the point of any piece of great literature? Or rather, what is great literature? Some would say that accomplished literature is a way of exceptionally telling a story. However, what is the point of storytelling? In many cases, stories are told for entertainment. However, most stories have a moral or theme conveying an important message about life or how to live it. This is the point of great literature, to convey this message beautifully. Some pieces of great literature are The Story-Teller, by Saki, Geraldine Moore the Poet, by Toni Cade Bambara, and Enemy Territory, by William Melvin Kelley. To understand the themes of great literature, you must also understand how to analyze it. The content analyzed in these stories is the setting, plot, and point of view.…
When reading an article or publication by an author many readers will not realize the messages hidden deep within the text. An author’s purpose is what emotions and thoughts the author wants to convey to the reader by use of distinct words and technics. In the article, “The F Word”, by Firoozeh Dumas, the author uses many technics to persuade the reader to take on her beliefs and feel sympathy for the blatant racism she faced as a child. The author’s purpose is the most powerful tool an author has, and is a constant factor in their diction, rhetorical devices, as well as sentence structure.…
The movie I chose to analyze was Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. Overall, I would say this is a must see movie. The movie is action packed, drama filled and heart felt. It really makes you appreciate those men and women who have died for our country. If I had to rate the movie between zero and five stars, five being the best, I would not hesitate to give the movie a five out of five. Besides all the action and well written dialogue, the actors who play the parts are perfect fits. All in all this movie accomplishes everything one of its type should hope to accomplish.…
Written by Arthur Miller, the Crucible is a reading filled with many significant and important quotes. One excerpt expresses the hidden dishonesty and deceit within the Puritan society. It says, “There are wheels within wheels in this village, and fires within fires” (28). At this part in the play, Mrs. Anne Putnam is having a dispute with Rebecca Nurse over the reasoning for her many miscarriages. Unlike Mrs. Putnam, Rebecca has been granted with plenty of children making her quite envious over Rebecca. She tries to suggest that maybe the Devil helped her have so many kids. This quote is therefore used by Mrs. Putnam to express her religious knowledge in order to help explain about this mysterious and puzzling event that has been occurring in their quaint village recently.…
