In “The Devil and Tom Walker” Tom Walker and his wife paint a perfect picture of two people who are not meant to be together. In the story they prove that all relationships are not perfect. Tom's wife had a love affair with herself and her dream was to achieve more wealth causing one major problem with the relationship. The couple does not deserve each other because of the aggravation they cause one another and the greed they have. Tom is more tired of his wife and at first doesn’t wish to give into the wishes of his to wife to make a deal with the “Black man” because he knows it will aggravate her because of the greed she has aggravates him. The couple do not deserve each other because of the aggravation they cause one another and the greed they have. The greed they have later comes back around and gives them what they both deserve.
The relationship between Tom Walker and his wife is a horrible relationship. The text states several reasons why the couple has a relationship filled with many flaws. The first statement that the text states that points at the first major flaw, is the wife’s short temper with her husband. The effect of the wife’s short temper leads to her abusing Tom and is giving the implication to the readers that the wife is leaving bruises on his cheeks. Another reason why the relationship is the way it is because “He had a wife as miserly as himself”, meaning that they both had equal very massive greed. The third flaw that takes a large effect on the relationship is the wife’s tendency to hide things such as eggs because she knows it will frustrate her husband. Later on the greed gets the best of her proving that she and her husband are greedy people.
