Homer Yannos
“That was Homer's genius. He combined action with thought, and he planned ahead” (Marsden 1993, p111). That was the Homer Yannos that not many people had been able to witness before. The novel, ‘Tomorrow When the War Began’ is a young adult fiction genre, written by John Marsden. It follows seven Australian teenagers attempting to make their way through a brutal war, while also making a heroic impact. Homer Yannos, one of the teenagers addressed in the book, made the most noticeable change throughout the novel. It demonstrates the importance of someone being able to step up and remain serious as it could have a positive impact on the situation. In the novel ‘Tomorrow, when the war Began’, Homer Yannos was born and raised as a slob, he ran around in the mud all day and never really thought on the serious side of things. Although, slowly throughout the novel he started to develop the maturity that was needed. This, in time, had a positive impact for the group of teenagers as it kept the teens safe in tricky and vulnerable situations. “Homer was becoming more surprising with every passing hour. It was getting hard to remember that this fast-thinking guy, who’d just spent fifteen minutes getting us laughing and talking and feeling good again, wasn’t even trusted to hand out the books at school.” (Marsden 2010, p. 104) Ellie had started to realize the change that Homer was starting to take. Once Homer finally realized that he was no longer on a fun camping trip with his friends, he started to adapt to the situation. He then knew that the only way to keep him and his friends safe, was to not take the situation as a joke.
