People management can be one of the most difficult jobs in the world, but it is certainly not rocket science. A good people manager is one who aims at creating a work environment that promotes employee empowerment. Following a few basic principles can help a manager drive such a work environment.
Demonstrate that you value people
As a manager, it is important to show how much you value your employees through your actions and the words you speak. Each employee has his or her unique value which must be appreciated by you. You must value individuals as human beings first and then as employees. You should also ensure that your treatment of employees does not depend on their current performance in their work role.
Share vision
You should ensure that the employees have knowledge about the organization’s vision and strategies. This will help them understand how their work role is aligned to this vision. You can also involve employees in the planning process and encourage them to provide their inputs.
Share goals & direction
Including employees in setting up objectives and planning plays an important role in driving employee empowerment. You must ensure that you share a picture of the positive outcome as a result of achieving the objectives so that the employees feel motivated to work towards them.
Trust people
Being a manager, it is essential for you to trust your employees to make the right decisions and take the correct actions despite the fact that you are not completely convinced with them initially. Putting your trust on employees helps you earn their trust as well.
Grant complete information for decision making
If you want your employees to make correct and logical decisions, you must provide them necessary access to all the information that will facilitate decision making.
