We can think on Strategy as a high level plan for achieving firm’s goals under conditions of uncertainty and continuous change. Now, what is the connection between Strategy and Management? It is simply the firm’s goals. The role of management is to move and guide firm toward goal accomplishment. During the Strategy block, we learned that every company exists for certain goal, which is expressed through its Mission and Vision statements. What makes for a good manager?
Years ago, the role of manager was mostly to ensure that the staff comes on time, does its work and does not create any problems, i.e. someone who has authority over others and maximize the physical output of their work. There was no need of engagement, empowerment, creativity and other similar modern concepts. However, today we live in a very different world where such terms are essential in management.
So, at first place, a good manager has to be leader, someone who inspires and motivates employees to engage with firm’s mission and vision. He not just maximizes the output from workers, but engage their minds and hearts in the work. The good manager manages with values and purpose, and coaches the staff in order to be more effective at work. He is honest, competent and forward-looking. All this is a foundation for building credibility. Employees respect managers who are credible. They have to believe in and trust their managers. For that reason, they have to embrace not being loved. They have to get used living with discontent and disagreement of others. Regardless of that, they have to stay the course of their decisions nevertheless they are not supported by all employees. Yet, if they are fair and clearly explain the rationale behind the tough decisions, they will be respected. Moreover, they have to let discontent employees openly to express their opinions, and show respect to them as well.
