Traditionally, nutrition programs were targeted to the indigent and poor populations in developing countries. Many of today 's Americans are malnourished also, but they are inundated with unhealthy foods and require a multidisciplinary approach to nutrition education. What would be the three most important points to include in a public nutrition program? Provide current literature to support your answer and include two nutritional education community resources.

Answer: Although we already know it is essential to eat a healthy diet, we may find it more challenging to sort through all of the information about nutrition and food choices. Nutrition is the provision to cells and organisms of the materials necessary (in the form of food) to support life. Healthy eating helps prevent high cholesterol and high blood pressure and helps reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. Many people today in America are malnourished and it is mostly due to indulging in unhealthy/poor dietary intake. These problems can be controlled by utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to public education. The doctors, social workers, nurses, dieticians and other health educators involved in health promotion should all have a part in ensuring and promoting healthy dietary intake with appropriate food portions and increasing physical activity.
The three most important points to include in a public nutrition program are (a) the relationship between food choices and chronic disease such as high blood pressure (high salt intake), high lipids (high fat intake), obesity/diabetes (high sugar/carb intake/low activity) and much more. Educating the public on how to use natural herbs/ seasonings, or salt substitute, reading labels for nutritional contents and ingredients and eating low carb food are all vital factors to know. It is also very important to increase your physical activity daily.

    The preventable diseases like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and renal failure have become an epidemic in our society. It seems like most of every one we know has either one of above mentioned diseases. Back in the days not everyone was able to afford good quality food, so whatever they ate they ate in moderation, on the other hand now food is more affordable, due to cheap imports from other countries. People have made up a mentality that if less food is good then more should be better, which is not always true. Most of this health care crisis is due to lack of public health education. As health care professionals we know that poor nutrition is responsible for the majority of preventable diseases, while general public has no idea about what goes on in their bodies and what is the importance of proper nutrition. First point which I am going to include in a public nutrition program is Heart disease. Heart disease is responsible for 600,000 deaths in the United States every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths. Heart disease alone cost the United States $108.9 million each year, total cost includes, cost of health care services, medications and lost productivity. Heart disease is preventable, if the individual just stops smoking, eats low sodium, low cholesterol, and low fat diet and exercises routinely. The second point is going to be Obesity. Obesity is defined as having an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity is more than just a cosmetic concern. It increases your risk of diseases and health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart diseases. Lack of education, irresponsible eating habits and poor selections of foods are responsible for this preventable disease. Third point will be to put more emphasis on consuming foods which could contribute to improving the quality of life and the feeling of well being. These foods are green vegetables and fruits.     Since kids spend a lot of their time in school, it is good medium to provide healthy weight education. Children are very impressionable and pick up their life long eating habits at a young age. That is why starting in elementary school positive eating habits and exercise should be encouraged. Ideas such as banning unhealthy foods from schools and increasing mandatory physical education sound good in theory, but are too costly and not feasible solutions for Baltimore. It is much more probable that children will learn to make better choices if good habits are reinforced in schools starting at a young age.     Every day the people in this nation zoom around in their busy lives. People cut corners to save time and often take the easy route in many tasks. Sometimes by cutting these corners, an impact can be made on the world around us and the people we love. Eating is just one of the many things that people forget to take care of. Food is the foundation to our bodies. Food is what keeps people going and fuels them to do what they need to do. In 337 BC, Hippocrates stated, “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” Most of the food people consume is not good for them. It is severely important to eat healthy nutritious foods. “A poorly nourished child will fail to grow properly; a poorly nourished adult will have a decreased resistance to infection and disease (The Columbia Encyclopedia, 2008).” The body needs a certain amount of vitamins and minerals to stay functioning properly on a daily basis and to keep sickness out. If people do not start eating and living healthier, sickness and chronic disease will only increase and continue to occur. 45% of Americans have at least one chronic condition and 26% of the population has two or more conditions (AACC, 2009). Poor eating habits are being passed down to children and these habits are going to be detrimental to our communities and to this nation.
