At that moment, the man on the radio said, “The tornado has touched the ground. I repeat, the tornado has touched the ground.” Upon hearing that my mom cut in front of three cars, and took the closest exit ramp to get off of the highway. I knew that terror was in my eyes as I looked back and noticed the tornado is a few miles away. My mom started to say a prayer, “Oh dear lord, please lead my family to a safe shop, or store, to bring us to safety from the tornado that is coming our way.” I thought that the prayer she was saying was funny, but my brother gave me a stern look, that said, “Shut up!” I knew from the look that I should shut up right now, and so I stopped. After my mom said the prayer, we started to pass shops and stores. All of them were closed or the power was out, then we started to feel that we might have to go to someone’s home and ask to stay until the major storm was over. But then, when we thought we were out of options, my brother spotted a store that looked like it had been there for hundreds of years. The sign looked like it was hung with a thread, that would break any second. Old fashioned lights, tools that were rusting and could turn to dust any second. But that was the best option we had. I think to myself that our families life could end really soon. But hoped that we will survive this terrible storm. We waited in the back of the room and heard the immense thunder and lightning. The lights flickered twice then go off. I was very scared when that happened because when I was younger, I was terribly afraid of the dark. But, I can feel my mom's hand on mine to comfort me through the dark. We sat in complete darkness for a while, then the owner turned on two flashlights, and gave one to my mom. A few minutes later, the lights came back on and we went back to the front of the store to see if the storm had stopped. It seemed like it did, so we thanked the man that let us in the store and left. As we got back onto the highway, everything was demolished. We could see the roots from the trees as they were uprooted, houses had gaping holes in them with trees sticking out. “This is the emergency broadcasting system, a tornado has just passed through the county and it is now ok to come out of your homes, but be at caution and watch for big tree branches,” the man over the radio said.
