Politics played a large role in terms of the slow, emergency response to the tragedy. Many politicians were interviewed and mostly claimed they were unaware of what had happened in New Orleans. What was even more shocking, was how long it took president Bush to become conscious of the issue. This happened on the fifth day after the hurricane. People were starving, searching for shelter and trying to find missing relatives. Some tried to leave the city, but were met by military men with guns, who had just instructed them to go back. These politicians were abusing their power and forgetting about what…

FEMA’s (Federal Emergency Management Agency) response was slow in providing food, water, housing, and other necessities for victims. FEMA arrived two days after the hurricane with supplies. American Red Cross was first to respond in Galveston the day after Ike made landfall. Major damage to homes consisted of roof damage, flooding (up to six feet of water), sides of buildings crumbled, and entire homes destroyed. FEMA promised Texas 300 trailers per week for the worst hit areas being the first to receive them. After six weeks fewer than 200 trailers had been provided for Texas residents. Many people remained in tent communities waiting for a place to live. People were not willing to quit their jobs and relocate. As Galveston residents remained in San Antonio and Austin in shelters FEMA insisted apartments was available in the Houston/Galveston area. The few apartment vacancies in existence were too expensive for people to pay. The majority of the homeless left in these shelter were elderly people, women, and children having only a fixed or limited income. Galveston Mayor, Lyda Ann Thomas, pleaded with FEMA for 500 trailers for homeless Galveston residents only to receive 54 trailers six months later. FEMA refused to set up temporary mobile home parks because of their experience with Hurricane Katrina in Alabama and Louisiana. Temporary mobile home…

As a child, I was ignorant and naive to what was happening around me in the world. I didn’t know that the city surrounding me, would soon be drowned and submerged in the legendary Hurricane Katrina.Though I was only four and couldn't recall many details of the catastrophic event, my mother remembered everything. We had heard two weeks prior ahead of time what was to come, however my mother having always been a strong-willed woman was determined not to leave despite the attempts my grandparents and father made for her to evacuate New Orleans with me and leave.Yet,…

Water started to drip from the ceiling as the cracks look as if they were cracking even more. We put a bucket to obtain the water and whenever it was full we would boil it or drop a water purification tablet to kill the germs and bacteria in it. The winds felt hard trying to break through the door. I prayed that the hurricane could be over with so that everything could be fine again and we waited praying as a family in unity. We were really worried about the food and water because we had almost finished more than three fourths of our food in three days. Soon after I shared my food with my family and I ate a a little as usual. Some of my family was starting to get sick so I too out my first aid kit and supplied them with whatever they needed. We were all tired as we stayed there and talked to each other. For the rest of that day we just slept, and in the morning it was all gone. We peaked through the doors and saw that the hurricane was over everything was destroyed but we were…

When someone thinks of California, they think of baby blue skies and palm trees along the streets. But, of course, the weekend my family decided to visit Disneyland, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld is the weekend Southern California experienced what the local news called a “tropical depression.”…

I was trying to wake up and trick my mind into believing that all of the buildings collapsing, people dying, gunshots firing was not real at all. Unfortunately none of the violence was ending, and at that point I knew i could not trick myself anymore. This was real. As I stand there crying my eyes out with no one familiar around me, I heard someone call my name with sirens going off at the same time. There were people crying, getting shot, dying, weeping all around me. There were dead bodies of people i had seen on the streets while walking. I stopped for a second and saw my friends walking towards me telling me to run to the bus as soon as possible. I did not want to go not knowing where my family was but that was my only choice to get home safe and to ease my mother's worries. I walked out and heard my friends in my bus screaming my name in the saddest matter and tones of voices. I could hear them holding back their tears, but at the same time i could hardly understand them because of all the tears they were shedding. When i got on the bus it was overflowing with kids and people, because the driver wanted to fit as many passengers as he possibly could transport. Many kids in the bus had no idea where their friends and siblings were, so i knew i was not alone. I finally arrived at my home and my mother was there waiting, trying to comfort me. She had been crying and…
