WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF TOURETTE SYNDROME?
People with Tourette Syndrome have two kinds of tics. Motor, or vocal tics. Motor tics are movements, hand shaking, blinking, shaking, etc. Vocal tics are sounds, throat clearing, squeaking, humming etc. All tics are involuntary, meaning that you can’t control them, which could get you in social trouble, if your tic looks voluntary, kissing, pinching, etc. People with Tourette also have low amounts of dopamine in their brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which controls movement.
WHAT CAUSES TOURETTE SYNDROME?
There are two ways people get tourette syndrome. The first being that they inherit it from their parents. The allele (of the gene SLITRK1) for having Tourette Syndrome is dominant, so they only need one Tourette allele to have it. The second way of getting it being pregnancy and birth complications, such as, being underweight at birth, head injury while in the womb, carbon monoxide poisoning, and swelling in the brain.

If their symptoms are not very severe, they can live normally without treatment. If they have moderate symptoms, they might have to take antihypertensive drugs, which limit dopamine. If they have severe symptoms, they would have to take neuroleptics, which are like less strong tranquilizer darts, in pill form. If they have extreme symptoms, they would have to take Atypical Neuroleptics, which limit dopamine AND serotonin. They might also need therapy, to help cope with the symptoms.
