Toyota Motor Corporation do a massive recalls because of a defect that causes gas pedals in many models. A lean manufacturing may be the main factor to cause this problem. By making products arrive just-in-time, eliminating waste, and cutting costs lead to a risk of quality issues. Toyota cuts costs by centralizing the procurement of parts and tries to use the same parts for more than one product. Unfortunately, Toyota’s quality control slipped then the company has to recall several models, all of which use the same defective gas pedal.
The first alternative choice is extending quality control to the engineering department by emphasizing good design and sufficient testing. This approach leads to reducing defective products, especially safety problems. Toyota should take more importance on quality control testing due to the quality and safety of the car is the most serious issue that customers concern. Moreover, a good design is a significant factor which cannot be ignored. According to this case, the problem is because Toyota uses the same parts in many different models. So, if there is something wrong with those parts, it will effect to several models which use those same defective parts. Therefore, it would be better to use different parts in different models because if there is a defective part, the problem will impact on only one model. However, this above approach will cause a time consuming process because we cannot finish quality control within one step but we have to follow many steps and rules strictly. Moreover, quality control may require doing a product testing in many times.
The second alternative choice is incorporate risk management into their long-term strategies. Through the temptation of cutting costs, making products arrive just-in-time and eliminating waste without understanding the growing the business too fast can lead to the additional risks. The risk management process includes finding, fixing, following
