With the rapid increase of economical globalization and urbanization, more problems are brought to our attention. One of them is traffic jams which is a menace to the life of the Dhaka city dwellers. The reasons can be listed as follows- Too many vehicles, lack of public transportation lack of enough roads , narrow roads, poor control of traffic system, lack of trained drivers, cheap and availability of gas, lack of modern transportation facilities like metro way, elevated expressway, flyover.
The numbers of vehicles are increasing day by day. In previous years, a car was a luxury but private vehicles are now becoming more accessible to the common people because of the reduction of the price. This is caused due to corruption and having no strict laws of giving taxes. Moreover the price of CNG gas is so cheap and available. As a result anyone can afford to buy a car.
Lack of public transport is another reason for increasing of vehicles and traffic jams . Public transport system in Dhaka city is not adequate and properly-routed. Instead of big and spacious buses, presence of large number of mini-buses and private vehicles can only contribute to carry few passengers, but not to reduction of traffic jams. In the morning, the guardian of a child is using private car for going to its educational institution. Thousands of private cars are being used only for this purpose and creating a huge jam. City transports also stop here and there without any valid reason causing Jams.
The inadequate infrastructure cannot handle the issue of traffic. The highway and road network is incapable of meeting the requirement of increasing number of vehicles. For a standard city, the minimum road requirement is 25%, but Dhaka has only 7.5% road of its total area. Road sides are blocked by the hawkers, salesman and shopkeepers which hinders the normal flow of traffic and causes traffic jam. Cars cannot pass through narrows roads which also creates traffic
