The play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is a story of forbidden love. When Romeo meets the beautiful Juliet they immediately fall in love. They are destined for marriage when everything goes wrong. Many people interpret this play as a tragedy, which they have good reason to assume, the play has many signs of being a tragedy. Though you could also deduce that Romeo and Juliet is a comedy. Despite the plotline following the genre of a comedy, we assume that this play is a mixture of both tragedy and comedy. Romeo could even go as far as being a psychopath, he has constant inner conflict and he commits suicide after 2 days of meeting his “true love”. In act 1, scene 1 Romeo is talking about Rosaline and he says he is “out of her favor where [he is] in love.” Romeo is saying that he is in love with Rosaline and she doesn’t love him back. Hours later in act 1 scene 5 he sees Juliet and immediately falls in love. He speaks to the serving man and tells him that Juliet “doth teach the torches to burn bright.” He thinks that her beauty is so profound that “she hangs upon the cheek of night,” meaning she is as beautiful as jewelry and she lights up like stars. She glows and teaches the torches to light up, mind you this is right after he just spilled his heart to Benvolio about Rosaline. After just loving Rosaline, Romeo immediately begins to fall in love with Juliet. Further on in the play when Romeo kills Tybalt he says too, “let fire-eyed fury be [his] conduct now.” Romeo is saying that he will let fury and rage guide him and make his decisions for him which is a sign of a psychopath. The audience cannot sympathize for Romeo because he is too quick to decide where his heart lies and he is a murderer. He doesn’t care that he killed Tybalt and he let rage make his decisions.
