The Murders Of Romeo And Juliet
In the play Romeo and Juliet two lovers in the middle of a family feud are driven to commit suicide. The three characters that are most responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet are Friar Laurence, the nurse and Romeo himself. Friar Laurence secretly marries Romeo and Juliet and devises a plan to fake Juliet’s death. The nurse helps Romeo and Juliet sneak out and send messages to one another and then turns her back on them when they need her the most. Romeo sneaks into a party uninvited and gets himself banished by killing Tybalt.
Friar Laurence has a big role in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. He marries Romeo and Juliet, not for love, but in the hopes that it would stop the fighting and the feud between their families. “For this alliance may so happy prove, / to turn your households rancour to pure love” (2.3.91-92). Once married the couple want to be together all the time and have to sneak out to see each other because their families still hate one another. If Friar Laurence had not married them they may have ran off together and would not have killed themselves. After Romeo was banished, Juliet came to Friar Laurence and he devises a plan for Juliet to fake her death so she wouldn’t have to marry Paris. “Take this thou vial, being then in bed, / and this distilling liquor drink thou off, / when presently through all thy veins shall run a cold and drowsy humor: (4.1.93-96). Friar Laurence wrote a letter to Romeo explaining the plan, but Romeo did not receive the letter. When Romeo found Juliet he thought she was dead and takes his own life in despair. Friar Laurence is ultimately to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet for marrying them for the wrong reasons and proposing to Juliet to fake her own death without ensuring Romeo was properly warned.
Similarly the nurse is at fault for the double suicide of Romeo and Juliet. The nurse helps Romeo and Juliet sneak out and be together
