The book ‘Trash’ is set in a dumpsite called Behala. Behala is a made up city because Mulligan didn’t want his novel to be seen as an attack on any specific country. In the novel Raphael quotes “It’s a place called Behala, and its rubbish-town” (Page 3). This quote tells the reader how much rubbish there is in Behala that is why it is called rubbish-town. “Well, you can smell Behala long before you see it” (Page 4).This quote tells the reader that Behala smells really bad because of how much rubbish there is. Another quote that describes Behala is “The piles stack up and I mean Himalayas: you could climb for ever, and many people do… up and down, into the valleys” (Page 4).
