Traumatic injuries are a leading cause of death and disability for all age groups, with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) being among the most devastating. Both SCI and TBI can lead to paralysis and other life-altering health impairments. Most injuries are preventable, but education is key to helping people understand these vital parts of our nervous system, how they are important to us, what can occur if they are injured, and simple steps to take in preventing these injuries from occurring, whether from vehicle crashes, falls, violence or sports and recreation. Sessions will be offered on organizing and scheduling programs and presenting programs that include information on the anatomy of the brain and spinal cord, how they can become injured, how to prevent injury. Sessions focused on the VIP educator will include how to relay personal stories of experience with an acquired injury, how an injury can affect your life, having a positive and productive life with a SCI or TBI, and the importance of taking actions to reduce your risk for injury. Relevance to Spinal Cord Injury or Disease
Spinal cord injuries are caused by vehicle crashes, falls, violence, sports and recreational activities such as diving. Injury prevention educators and VIP educators learn to present programs that begin by showing models of the brain and spinal cord, and explaining what they do and how they work. Then they point out how easily they can be injured, and that there are no cures for these injuries. They go on to describe how injuries to the spinal cord affect movement, and your life. When a VIP shares their personal story, as to how an injury occurred to them, the audience connects with someone who has experienced this, making it much more real to a teenager, or anyone. The audience learns they are vulnerable to spinal cord injuries but also have the power to take precautions to protect themselves by actions such as driving safe and sober without distractions, wearing a seat belt, not diving into shallow water, playing sports responsibly, avoiding falls and violence, and other means of prevention in order to protect their spinal cord and
