A concussion is an injury that disrupts the normal functioning of the brain. Your brain is surrounded by spinal fluid to cushion it from your hard skull. If you are hit hard your brain may hit your skull and become injured. There may be no visible signs of a concussion at all. The symptoms of a concussion vary from each person. It wasn’t until 1994 that the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) committee was created. They viewed the situation as a mild problem. At that time players were allowed to return to play after suffering a concussion. Nobody knew of the long term effects that concussions could have on the brain. It wasn’t until 2009 that a new return-to-play protocol was set in place. This protocol stated that a player could not return to play after being removed from a game or practice unless there were no symptoms of a concussion both moving and at rest. The player had to be cleared by his team physician and another independent physician. Now there are many steps one must take in order to be allowed to participate. The first step is rest and recovery. This allows for a player to recover from concussion symptoms. The next step is light aerobic exercises. This step is to see if there are any signs of a concussion that might return. The third step introduces more complex movements. This step is also used to spot symptoms of a concussion. The fourth step is more focused on football related activities. Including this step adds the load of playing to see if the brain can handle it.
