The effects of a concussion can sometimes last longer than the symptoms. This has become problematic because, athletes will believe they have healed and request to continue in their sport, but contrary to their self-diagnosis, they could lead to serious brain damage with the lack of rest. High school athletes are more susceptible to longer-lasting effects of concussions because of the immaturity of the nervous system. Short-term concussion effects can last from a few hours, to weeks and trauma can appear after a few days. Long-term concussion effects can last for months, and even years; just one concussion can linger for as long as thirty years, or more. It is appropriate to receive a consolation from a licensed health care provider before returning to play, because self-accusations are more wrong than right.
