Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can occur frequently and may cause serious damage. TBI can happen when a bump, jolt, blow, or any head injury causes damage to the brain. MIllions of people a year suffer brain injuries in the United States alone. More than half of those million incidents require the patient to be taken to a hospital because of the severity of the injury. Depending on how severe the injury is, it could cause serious brain damage and potentially be life threatening. Half of all TBIs occur from motor vehicle accidents.
Some symptoms of TBI may not appear until days or weeks after the injury happens. One of the mildest forms of a TBI is concussion. Concussions can cause headaches, nausea, neck pain, dizziness, ringing in the ears, and extreme tiredness.
Some people who have a moderate to severe will have these symptoms along with others which include: a headache that gets worse and doesn’t go away, repeating vomiting and or nausea. More symptoms include convulsions and or seizures, inability to wake up after falling asleep, slurred speech, weakness and numbness in the arms and the legs, and dilated eye pupils.

Serious traumatic brain injuries should always be handled with medical care as soon as possible. Treatment and outcome depend on how severe the injury is and how fast the injury gets treated. TBI can cause a very wide range of emotions, changes, affected thinking, sensation and language. TBI can also be associated with PTSD. PTSD or Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or seeing a terrifying. PTSD can’t be cured but there are treatments that may help. PTSD is very common as it occurs more than 3 million times in the US

TBI is categorized according to its severity (1) concussion, (2) contusion and (3) laceration. Concussion is defined as caused by a blow to the head that bruises the brain. The bruising causes tiny blood vessels, or capillaries, in the brain to rupture, which compromises blood supply to the neurons supported by those capillaries. Contusion is defined as head trauma in which the head is jarred with such force that the brain becomes shifted in the skull and is badly bruised. And finally, laceration is defined as tearing of the brain, particularly the outer surface of the brain. Objects such as bullets that penetrate the skull will enter the brain and rip through brain tissue, unraveling neural connections and causing massive bleeding, or…

Bennet Omalu discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in a former NFL player, Mike Webster. CTE is a progressive brain degenerative disease that is caused by repetitive brain trauma. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy can affect who has had multiple brain injuries and may be any age. CTE can only be diagnosed through an autopsy but, tests can be done to determine if a person might have it. Some of the symptoms of CTE include cognitive impairment, impulsive behaviors, apathy, short-term memory loss, difficulty planning and carrying out tasks, emotional instability, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts or behavior. (Mayo Clinic) Because Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is only diagnosable through autopsy all of the symptoms are unclear. (Mayo Clinic) Other possible symptoms may include irritability, aggression, speech and language difficulties, dysphagia, motor impairment, vision and focusing problems, olfactory abnormalities, and dementia. These symptoms happen not only because the brain is literally deteriorating but because people with CTE have an abnormal buildup of a protein in their brain called nau. (Boston University) Right now there is not a true treatment or cure for chronic traumatic encephalopathy but doctors suggest that cutting back on physical activities might help reduce symptoms. Prevention for CTE is basically to take concussions very seriously and always take precautions in contact sports. (Mayo…

Traumatic brain injury or TBI as it is sometimes called is the injury of the brain that is caused by a powerful force outside of the body. Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability in childhood (Kraus, 1995). As a result of TBI, many young children/students display negative behaviors ranging from aggression and rage to depression and withdrawal from peers and other adults. Aggression has been found to be the most prevalent problem behavior of children who receive a TBI during early childhood. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, also known as CTE is a progressive degenerative brain disease. Some symptoms of CTE Include memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control problems, aggression, depression, anxiety, suicidality, parkinsonism, and eventually, progressive dementia. As you can see in the thermal scan above the brain is progressively getting worse. According to Alzheimer's Association, these symptoms often begin years or even decades after the last brain trauma blow to the brain or the end of active athletic involvement. There is no “typical” person with TBI. In discussing the immediate and residual effects of TBI, there are dimensions that vary in several extents. Brain functioning, cognitive skills, behavior changes, and social skills are some of the areas affected by TBI. What is most crucial for understanding people with TBI is to know what happens when a person suffers a brain injury. While I will not go through the medical determinants of what happens to the brain after a head injury, I will argue that the lack of awareness and education is what’s manifesting the myths about…

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) also known as a concussion is a serious health problem to athletes, especially to football players. The brain controls the body and gives a person personality and defines every aspect of his or her life. A brain injury can disrupt a person’s life in an instance and like broken bones or bruises; TBI can limit or prevent normal body functions. A brain injury, unlike common injuries can damage mental abilities to include memory and speech. There are only two classifications in TBI; mild and severe. Mild TBI is classified as loss of consciousness and or confusion and disorientation for less than thirty minutes. Severe TBI is thirty or more minutes and with memory loss. A person classified with severe TBI has limited functions of legs and arms, abnormal speech and emotional problems. When a person experiences a brain injury they often do not realize that one has occurred. TBI often leads to Alzheimer or Parkinson’s or Lou Gehrig’s diseases, and other forms of dementia and brain tumors. No two brains are alike and no two brains injuries are the same makes treatment and recovery a complex and challenging task. In football players, TBI is a serious concern because players do not know or don’t let somebody know about the injury and continually play in fear of losing a spot on the team roster. No player wants to let down the team. Football players only want the respect of other players and get the win at the end of the day. The effects of the injury compounds and clouds their judgment and growth until it is too late to correct problems.…

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury- or TBI- caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth” (“What Is a Concussion?” ) When an individual experiences a major blow to the head or body, the brain is pushed against the inside of the skull and can bruise. Although the brain has fluid and protective membranes (meninges) that cushion it, the blow to the head causes the brain to move at different speeds that cause damage to the tissues and nerves. A concussion can also shift the balance of chemicals and ions in the brain, leading to damage to nerve cells and possible loss of consciousness (Menon).…
