The Portuguese brought a few slaves home from Africa, but found that they were impractical for use in Europe with its small, family-based farms and town life. However, it soon was clear how slavery could be readily adopted in the Americas. Like the overwhelming majority of preindustrial societies, African kingdoms practiced slavery, and when Europeans offered to trade their goods for slaves, African traders accommodated them. As a general rule, African slave hunters would capture Africans, generally from other groups than their own, and transport them to trading posts along the coast for European ships to carry to the New World. However, despite the fact that slavery already existed in Africa, the Atlantic trade interacted with and transformed these earlier aspects of slavery. Before the Atlantic slave trade began, slavery took many forms in Africa, ranging from peasants trying to work off debts to those that were treated as "chattel," or property. The Atlantic trade emphasized the latter, and profits from the trade allowed slaveholders both in Africa and the Americas to intensify the level of exploitation of labor. African slaves were traded to two areas of the world: the Western Hemisphere and Islamic lands in the Middle East and India. Fewer slaves crossed the Sahara than the Atlantic, but the numbers were substantial. Whereas most slaves that…

As the demand for slavery grew it created the Atlantic slave trade. Starting with trade first between the Caribbean, and southern colonies, and then expanding to include Europe, the slave trade grew more refined, and grim. Larger numbers of slaves began to be transported on merchant ships sometimes up to 500 slaves were brought over at a single time. Once brought over the slaves were torn apart from their families, sold, and forced to work under horrific conditions. Without the ability to speak up for themselves, slaves had no opportunities to gain rights or freedoms until the civil war.…

The European’s saw the Africans as something so vile and so putrid that they decided to punish them. After capturing some of these Africans and enslaving them, the Europeans sent them over to the Americas and forced them to complete manual labor. On the way to the Americas, the Africans often died in the process of trying to become immune to European diseases; the Europeans would force these diseases onto them in order to make the rest of the population immune. On the way to and in America, the slaves were harshly beaten and were wrongly treated for the reason that they looked differently than the Europeans did. Once in America, the slaves were able to farm new types of crops, causing a greater demand for these foods and resources from Europe.…

Wait hasn’t slavery been around for a long time? Well that’s correct African kings would go into battle with each other. These kings would send their strongest warriors to capture the other tribe and bring back the other tribes people. What the king would do with those people is basically turn them into slaves and either let them work for him or sell them Europeans in trade of guns, gold and other goods. To many Europeans, slavery was not a new concept. Prior to African slavery, indentures and natives were used, but the use of these people was not successful or cost-effective. Natives resisted, died in large numbers to European diseases, and had knowledge of the region, which would allow them to escape much easier. Additionally, although indentures did have knowledge of farming and had some resistance to European diseases, they were prone to new diseases and were already assimilated. To solve the issues with previous iterations of slavery, Europeans eventually turned to Africans. Because these people worked in a warm environment,…

Seventeenth Century slavery was one of the most cruel and sad acts that humanity has imposed on itself. While slaves weren’t seen as humans back then, that doesn’t mean that we should justify it today. However, treating slaves – most specifically slaves in the triangular trade – as property had economic impacts on areas such as Africa, West Europe, and the New World. The Triangular Trade was something that connected the three regions of North America and the Caribbean’s, Africa, and Europe. Today, we have international trade flows, inputs and outputs, and deals. The Triangular Trade was kind of like the 17th Century’s version of today’s trade system and “world order” as some have come to call it. Basically, raw materials such as sugar, cotton,…

After rebellions such as Bacon’s Rebellion occurred many people decided to shift from indentured servants to African slaves thus beginning the long period of slavery. Between 1492 and 1820 over 7.7 million Africans were transported to the New World. During the voyages from Africa to the colonies many of the slaves died due to unsanitary conditions upon the ship, malnourishment, and etcetera. The slave trade also separated families and friends which can be exemplified by the quote “several brothers, who in the sale, were sold in different lots”.(69) To make matters worse many slaves were sold to cruel masters who punished the slaves by whipping them or hurting them in other painful manner.…

The cause of the beginning of African slavery in the new world is not a light topic, and many historians argue many different points, although none can pinpoint an exact date. Some historians argue that the Portuguese triggered it when they sailed down the coast of Africa, discovering tribes, while some historians argue that it was in fact Christopher Columbus's landing in the new word that caused it. Slavery was not a new idea at the time, with Africans enslaving each other and Europeans having different forms of slavery back into the early pre-modern world. European slavery in the new world was on another level of wrong though. Europeans at first did not seek out Africans, as they planned to use the natives. The Europeans later found out that European viruses that hardly affected them would be devastating to the natives. Smallpox was of the worst diseases that made its way over, killing natives in 1/4 the time as it killed Europeans as natives had no immunity and could not fight it off. This combined with the fact that there were nowhere…

Expanding European empires in the New World lacked one major resource a work force. In most cases the indigenous peoples had proved unreliable (most of them were dying from diseases brought over from Europe), and Europeans were unsuited to the climate and suffered under tropical diseases. Africans, on the other hand, were excellent workers: they often had experience of agriculture and keeping cattle, they were used to a tropical climate, resistant to tropical diseases, and they could be "worked very hard" on plantations or in mines, so africans would be excellent workers to handle the work of others so in order to assist them in their work Africans were kidnapped and forced to be made their slaves.…
