Introduction to Operations Management
The purpose of this essay is to analyze the different Operation Management perspectives of Wal-Mart. Identifying the organization’s main line of business, discussing the specific types of operations that takes place in the service department, describing the nature of the operations, and identifying the global strategies of that organization in a one to two page paper.
Wal-Mart’s main line of business is standing strong, despite the fact that Wal-Mart is the nation’s largest retailer; there are plenty of people who do not shop at Wal-Mart. These particular consumers feel that Wal-Mart offers low quality merchandise, spotty services, mistreat their employees, environmental impact, and driving small local retailers out of business. But many of those misunderstandings are starting to fade away, partly as a result of some well-timed improvements the company has made, their product line-up and its environmental record; furthermore, there’s nothing like the worst recession in 80 years to nude “low prices” a little higher on the collective buyer’s priority list. Wal-Mart may not be making its employees rich, but they handed out very few pink slips in the downturn and remain the country’s largest private employer. Here are five product categories where you can compare and shop in good conscience at the nation’s “low-price leader.”
1. Wal-Mart has focused on bringing in more big brands which has made it an attractive option for shoppers seeking consumer electronics in the sub-$1,000 category for a top of the line television and camera. For example, some Wal-Mart stores offered a 50-inch Samsung plasma television for less than $700 during the last year Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
