Trifles By Susan Glaspell
“Trifles”, which is a one-act play written by Susan Glaspell in 1916 when discrimination towards women is not criticized, or when women hardly work outside of their house, and what they could do was limited including legal aspects, such as having no right to vote and to sit on juries. (Maillakais) This story is about one man, John Wright, was killed with a rope around his neck. One day, the people who were related to the dead, such as the first finder of the dead body and friends of Mr. Wright’s friends/neighbors, are called by the county attorney and sheriff. As “Trifles” means “A thing of little value or importance” (Oxford University), while men are inspecting the dead body, women notice objects, trifles, seem not to do with the mysterious dead but actually those are. This story is based on the real murder of one man, which Susan Glaspell reported on working as a journalist. I think that the author wants to express status difference between men and women by symbolic objects showing isolation of Mrs. Wright, …show more content…
Wright and her situation. She used to sing and be cheerful like a canary. “She was kind of a bird herself –real sweet and pretty, kind of timid and –fluffy.” (Glaspell 95) However, after she married Mr. Wright, she would be like a bird in the cage and it implies she only have had freedom within the cage –the house. Who and what makes her do so is Mr. Wright. “He was a hard man, Mrs. Peters. Just to pass the time of day with him. Like a raw wind that gets to the bone.” (Glaspell 95) At the time, while women began to gain independence divorce was not common in America. (Engel) That is why she could not decide to divorce and the situation she had no one to consult because of the lonely situation in the cage Mr. Wright made. The canary was the only one living creature that she could be relaxed on because she felt sympathy with the bird, so speaking extremely, I assume when the bird wad killed, Mrs. Wright

Susan Glaspell’s “Trifles” dwelled on the investigation of the murder scene of Mr. Wright. In the beginning of the play, Mr. Wright was found dead in the upstairs bedroom with a rope hung around his neck. Lewis Hale recalled how he discovered Mrs. Wright acting bizarrely, and that she told him that her husband was murdered while he was sleeping. Mrs. Wright’s strange behavior and body language caused Mr. Hale and the Sherriff to believe that Mrs. Wright was the main suspect in her husband’s murder. There are three significant reasons for Mrs. Wright’s strange behavior. Mrs. Wright’s relationship, lifestyle, and the patriarchal dominance during that era caused Mrs. Wright to act inappropriately.…

The women also find that Mrs. Wright was making a quilt. The stitches were all normal up to a certain point, then are “all over the place” (1073). The women also discover an empty bird cage in the cupboard. The door of the cage is broken, as if someone had been “rough” with it. While looking through the quilting material, they find a pretty box containing the dead bird. They speculate that Mrs. Wright was…

In Glaspell’s Trifles, the canary and its subsequent death assists in an explanation of why Mrs. Wright acts the way she does and also provides a way to compare her before her marriage to after getting married. Before marriage, Mrs. Wright had been a sweet and pretty girl known throughout town for her pleasant disposition. Yet, as Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale point out, “[Mrs. Wright] used to sing. He killed that, too” (Glaspell 1012). This emphasizes…

When the women are looking around downstairs they come across a bird cage in the cupboard. Mrs Hale observes the door is broken off and someone must have been "rough with it," suggesting the motive for the crime. When Mrs. Hale looks inside Mrs. Wrights sewing box hoping to find scissors she finds a box and inside is the dead bird wrapped in silk. The birds neck looked as if it had been strangled. The women recall that when Minne Foster was younger she was lively, wore pretty clothes and sung in the choir, they said "I heard she used to wear pretty clothes and be lively, when she was Minnie Foster, one of the town girls singing in the choir." The bird represented Minnie before she was married to Mr. Wright. Mrs. Hale says, "She-come to think of it, she was kind of like a bird herself-real sweet and pretty, but kind of timid and-fluttery. How- she- did- change." Minne and the bird were both caged, the bird was in stuck in an actual cage and Minne was stuck in the house all the time. Mr. Wright changed Mrs. Wright, he took all those good things away, he was controlling he didn’t allow her to see her friends or leave the house, he even stopped her from singing. The bird was her motive…

The canary and its cage are symbolic of both Mrs. Wright and her life. The bird directly represents Mrs. Wright in the way that she has been forced to live. The cage symbolizes her life in the way that it restricts canary held captive inside. This connection is evident when Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters discover the canary. Upon this finding Mrs. Hale relates the bird to Mrs. Wright by stating, "She-come to think of it, she was kind of like a bird herself-real sweet and pretty, but kind of timid and-fluttery" (1:1:107). It can be seen here that apparently Minnie Foster was a different woman once she was married to John Wright. Before their marriage, she was a girl who sang in the choir and wore attractive clothing. The canary, like Minnie Foster, sang beautifully and was incredibly lively. However, following her marriage to John Wright, she was forced to live a life comparable to that of the caged bird. Her freedom of the outside world was revoked and she had to live a life of seclusion.…

“Trifles”, a one act play written by Susan Glaspell, is about a woman named Mrs. Wright who is suspected of murdering her husband, John. Throughout this play, Glaspell uses symbolism, irony, and the setting of the play and draw the readers in. The men investigating the scene are unable to solve the crime due to the fact that each piece of evidence is a domestic item that is generally specific to women. However, the two women that are also involved throughout this scene begin to pick up on these clues as the story progresses. Collectively the use of irony, the setting, and symbolism portray the ideals and attitudes of the characters giving the play's ending a deeper meaning.…

Wright, formerly Minnie Foster, used to sing before she married. After her marriage, she got a bird that sings. Mr. Wright, having already “killed” one form of singing, proceeds to do so with yet another form, the bird (paragraph 244). The bird is a reflection of Mrs. Wright’s pre-marriage personality, and when killed, it is essentially killing Minnie Foster again. The two women become sympathetic toward Mrs. Wright, backing up the desire to withhold the evidence of the dead bird. Meanwhile, the men are searching for evidence of motive, in order to convict Mrs. Wright. While the women are gathering belongings to take to Mrs. Wright, they discover an unfinished quilt that has some stitching that is out of place; Mrs. Hale decides that it would make Mrs. Wright happy if she fixed the stitching for her. The women also discover that Mr. Wright was murdered in the same fashion that the bird was killed. Mrs. Petersrecalls when her kitten was killed right in front of her, and remembers that she had wanted to “hurt” the person responsible, however, she was being held back. At that, she understands the emotions controlling Mrs. Wright and becomes more sympathetic to…

The play “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell takes place in a bleak, untidy kitchen of a farmhouse. Farmer John Wright has been murdered and his wife, Minnie Wright, is taken into custody as a suspect to his murder. Sheriff Peters and County Attorney George Henderson pride themselves on their powers of detection and logical reasoning. They begin searching through the house trying to find any sort of evidence. But it is the two women, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, who discover the trifles in which is the key evidence that the men are looking for. Because this story is set in the twentieth century community, the men take no concern in what the women have to say or do. By the end of this play, the women decide not to tell them men of the evidence they found in the farmhouse since the men believe that they are superior. In the play “Trifles”, Glaspell shows us that the men have the role of being head of everything and how the women do not get as fairly treated.…

The bird represent the joyful life Mrs. Wright wants and use to have, and for Mr. Wright it represents his cruelty and abuse. The bird sings and provides warmth and joy for Mrs. Wright. The bird is a sign of cheerfulness in a bleary home. Mrs Hale states, "He didn't drink, and kept his word as well as most, I guess, and paid his debts. But he was a hard man, Mrs. Peters. Just to pass the time of day with him--." She stopped, shivered a little. "Like a raw wind that gets to the bone." Mr. Wright strangles the bird, once again neglecting his wife, trapping his wife in a bleary place, and being cruel and abusive.…

"Trifles," a one-act play written by Susan Glaspell, is a cleverly written story about a murder and more importantly, it effectively describes the treatment of women during the early 1900s. In the opening scene, we learn a great deal of information about the people of the play and of their opinions. We know that there are five main characters, three men and two women. The weather outside is frighteningly cold, and yet the men enter the warm farmhouse first. The women stand together away from the men, which immediately puts the men against the women. Mrs. Hale's and Mrs. Peters's treatment from the men in the play is reflective of the beliefs of that time. These women, aware of the powerless slot that has been made for them, manage to use their power in a way that gives them an edge. This power enables them to succeed in protecting Minnie, the accused. "Trifles" not only tells a story, it shows the demeaning view the men have for the women, the women's reaction to man's prejudice, and the women's defiance of their powerless position.…

Wright’s abusive behavior. When she married, Mrs. Wright led a quiet life as a Farmers’ wife and had no children. On the other hand, Mrs. Hale recounts Mrs. Wright as “Minnie Foster when she wore a white dress with blue ribbons and stood up there in the choir and sang” (1394). The only joy and companionship Mrs. Wright experienced were that of her pet bird. As the women collected Mrs. Wright’s sewing things, they stumbled across a box with her dead bird wrapped in a silk cloth. After looking at each other in horror, Mrs. Peters confirms “Somebody-wrung-its-neck.” (1393). Before Minnie Foster became Mrs. Wright, her life was vibrant and full of life, now the only joy she possessed was killed by her husband and Mrs. Hale insists, “She used to sing. He killed that, too.” (1393). Though Mr. Wright appears to be an upstanding citizen, his heartless killing of Mrs. Wright’s bird intensified her reasoning’s for murdering…

The play “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell is about the major differences between women and men. This story was written in a time period when women were treated much differently than they are today, and the women and this story are not taken seriously. This story exposes the sexism that women dealt with then, and still to some extent deal with today. Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale find incriminating evidence against Minnie, but the men never think to ask them their opinion; they are too busy looking for solid tangible, evidence. The “trifles” the women are worried about do not matter to the men. Although the women find evidence to believe Minnie is the killer, they feel somewhat responsible for abandoning her. The women and the men in this story are both somewhat sexist. The women are on Minnie’s side, and the men are on her husband John 's side. This is because of the differences in men and women.…
