Susan Glaspell’s Trifles The play “Trifles” was written by Susan Glaspell in the year 1916. The play is a reflection of the culturally bound notion of the gender in the community. The play also reflects the preoccupied mindset of the author regarding the sex roles. The analysis can be started from the title of the play “Trifles” which is a clear suggestion of the thinking of women. Irony also runs during many instances in the play. The climax includes the discussion of women which men thought was discussion of housework. This example also exemplifies the irony in the title “Trifles.”
It suggests that women are mostly concerned with issues which are unimportant and often termed as mere trifles. In Trifles, Glaspell wants the reader to broaden the thinking and understand the human perspective as a whole and the values they believe in. It is also important to note that it is not universal that the approach of women and the final decision in the murder case to protect Mrs. Wright is particularly taken on the basis of gender. This is evident from the thinking of Mrs. Peters that initially argued that the law is the ultimate authority and Mrs. Wright should not have any sympathy. She was of the view that the problem of gender should not be foremost especially when concerning situations pertaining to crimes. Women in the play went to the crime scene without any intentions of changing the evidences. Instead, women went to the home to discover something that could be valuable and they evaluated the crime scene while remaining open-minded.
