Trotsky’s Role:
After the February Revolution in 1905, Trotsky was arrested and exiled
When he returned to Russia in May 1917, he was preoccupied that too many Mensheviks supported the Provisional Government. As a result he became an official member of the Bolshevik Political Party
When the Bolsheviks gained control of the Petrograd Soviet, he became its leader
October 1917, he became one of the dominant leaders of the Military Revolutionary Committee (MRC) of the Soviet. The MRC controlled 20,000 Red Guards, 60,000 Baltic sailors, and the 150,000 Petrograd soldiers of the garrison.
The most important thing that Trotsky did was building up of the Red Army, without which the revolution will not have been a success for the Bolsheviks.
At Smolny Institute (a girl’s school but used as his office) Trotsky made his plans to gain control of key buildings of the Provisional Government.
In October 1917, the Bolsheviks reduced the number of demonstrations they were doing as the crowds of people were getting harder to control.
In preparation for the revolution they relied more in small units of disciplined workers and soldiers.
Trotsky and the Bolsheviks were prepared to overthrow the Provisional Government on October 24th 1917.
In conclusion Trotsky led and prepared the Bolsheviks to control Russia.
