In this book we have a young narrator by the name of Arnold Spirit Junior who is experiencing a lot of yanks for a 14 year old. Every form of violence that is present in the book is due to alcohol abuse, the drunk driver that killed Arnold’s grandmother, the party that leads to the fire that ends up killing Marry, even Arnolds parents background, these are traumatic images tied to alcohol abuse. The community expect him to attend the Wellpinnit School and be like any other Indian pupil in the reservation, whereas on the other hand Arnold as an individual wants more in life and that dissimilarity between him and the community lead to Arnold being physically and psychologically abused, he is mocked and beaten by the community including his childhood friend Rowdy. Understanding Rowdy’s home situation and his personality Arnold doesn’t take Rowdy’s abuse by heart. He understands that Rowdy only has him as a friend and the thought of Arnold transferring to another school is frustrating to him and the only way he knows how to express his emotions is by being violent to the other person like his father. He believes that crying is a sign of weakness and man shouldn’t cry which is why he denies that he was crying to Arnold when he finds him in the bush in Mary’s funeral. Even at school Rowdy is consider a bully and likes to appear tough even other kids are afraid of him but on the other hand Arnold is very much different to Rowdy but they are friend ne even feel comfortable around him. The domestic abuse that Rowdy suffers at home has shaped him to being this violent person even in the way he plays
