Expository Essay
True Identity Hiding one’s true identity is like a hermit crab hiding in its shell all its life. Why would anyone like to be a hermit crab? People often underestimate themselves and do not know the power of the essence of being one’s true colors. Some people behave one way in a certain place and react very diverse in another setting. Many people strive to be themselves but fail because of the fear of criticism from the society. Many people have had consequences in trying to be someone they aren’t. The concept of limitations with regard to the human experience is most strikingly brought up in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. The Scarlet Letter talks about a person named Chillingworth. He tries to hide his identity from a whole town by being a doctor. The reason he has is to protect his identity from a man that cheated on his wife. He tortures a minister named Dimmesdale because he has reasons to believe that he was the culprit. Chillingworth tortures him mentally, however, as a result to him hiding his identity, the townspeople has began to get suspicions and talk rumors about him. They’ve called him names such as a demon and a leech. This demonstrates the consequences that Chillingworth experienced when he tried to hide his true identity. It shows that if a person tries to hide their true identity, it could lead to certain consequences. Being someone that someone is not can be detrimental because there is a lot of consequences in it. It doesn’t have to be physical, but it can be mental as well. Former governor Jim McGreevey was a married man with children. He resigned after stating that he was gay. They publically humiliated him by calling him offensive names. Someone had even accused him of sexual harassment. The fact that he had a wife and children did not help him at all.
