True Notebook Book Report
I am reading the book “True Notebooks” by Mark Salzman. It is about a teacher who teaches a writing class in a juvenile detention center. The student wrote about their life and some of the things they wrote were interesting and deep. For example one of the students wrote about hate and how it been through his life “hate taught me how to speak, hate taught me how to love, and eventually hate taught me how to hate. This kid also said that his partner was the person who changed his life because he taught him how to speak, love, and hate.
There was also a writer who who visited the juvenile detention center so he can help can learn about them . He also teaches the kids how to write and uses they're writing for his non-fiction book. I have also noticed that most of the kids come from a dysfunctional family and had no positive role models. In this book you can also feel their emotions and the stress they would also get lonely and confused and depressed which made me feel bad since this is book is nonfiction.
On page 51 you can see a sign of negativity after pointing out that they are putting negative things into positive things “sometimes you can’t think of anything positive. All you can think about is the negative, because that is all there is in your life. What’re you supposed to write about then?” this shows that these kids have been surrounded by bad things and were affected by

When Scott Monk was watching A Current Affair, he was inspired to write his novel ‘Raw’ as he saw story that featured a story about a detention Centre for young offenders in far north Queensland. It focused on a program run by a husband and wife team who took on young offenders under their wings. Just like in Monks novel, this real life scenario would go on stock rides, wake the young people at the crack of dawn and muck around waterfalls. It was the last chance the offenders had before being sent to prison.…

    The Hot House Book Report

Crimes against children are not tolerated among inmates. (I find it ironic that there exists a barometer of acceptable crimes in prison!) The book begins with the story of a child abductor/molester, Joe Hicks, who needs to be transferred to the hot house from Michigan because he will not survive since he is a child molester. He goes to the hot house as an informant and it does not take long for the inmates to know he is a snitch. For example, Hicks and his cellmate plan a jailbreak via helicopter, Hicks informs the guards, and Hicks’ cellmate is severely punished with Hicks getting a lighter punishment. Next, Hicks gets a new cellmate without explanation. This raises a red flag in the mind of the prisoners and the plot thickens and further unfolds in Chapter seven with prisoner Carl Bowles.…

In this short story, the part’s that stood out to me was in paragraph 22. Here he talks about how this class has affected his daily life. He could not go out in public for fear of being targeted out. So he kept his talking to a minimum. Then he goes on to paragraph 23 where he tells of not feeling alone. But in paragraph 26 is when he finally realizes that for the first time, he understood everything the teacher has said to him. He then replies back to her and says “you exhaust me with your foolishness and reward my efforts with nothing but pain, do you understand me?” That was his triumph!…

The author is telling a story, and in the story, he starts from the beginning, essentially, of Cathey's educational journey. This relates to all levels of students because at some point in each person's life, they were a beginner. He is teaching the younger students a lesson by explaining the importance of learning to read and write from early on. And he is teaching the teachers that they need to be more present in their student's educational journeys, rather than just seeing they got something right or wrong—these teachers need to work with the student to make sure the student understands why something is what it…

One student that benefited from the class was Francisco Javier. Francisco wrote two letters to his mother explaining how he feels and appreciates her. In one of his letters he said, “You know what, Mom? When you lecture or counsel me, even though it doesn’t seem like I’m listening, your words stay in my mind. When I go to bed, I reflect on them. I know you think I don’t appreciate everything you’ve done for me, but it’s the opposite.”(96) Even though he never sent either of his letters to his mom, he shared his love and appreciatioTaft Shooter Who Opened Fire at Taft Union…

They watch the statistics on child abuse and have noticed some interesting facts. ChildHelp has noticed that over three million child abuse reports have been written in the last year (within the United States). This means that over six million children have been abused (Child Abuse Statistics). The children can be abused physically, mentally, and emotionally. Webster’s dictionary defines abuse as “bad or improper treatment; maltreatment” (“Abuse”). It can cause a multitude of issues in adolescents, some of which will continue into their adulthood. The effects of abuse can vary due to the circumstance, type, and length of the abuse. However, they can usually be categorized based on physical, behavioral, and psychological effects. The physical effects of abuse can include poor physical health, brain trauma, impaired brain development, and difficulty sleeping (Long Term Consequences of Child Abuse and Neglect, 2013). The behavioral effects can include substance abuse, risky sexual decision-making, criminal activity, and self-harm (Long Term Consequences of Child Abuse and Neglect, 2013). The psychological effects are the most detrimental. Some of the psychological effects include dissociation, anxiety, depression, flashbacks, eating disorders, and discomfort with physical tough (Long Term Consequences of Child Abuse and Neglect, 2013). Poverty in the United States has become a much more serious and greater issue as years pass by. The poverty rate is rising, and more and more people are spiraling into debt, homelessness, and unemployment. This mechanism used by this capitalist country has long affected the future of this nation: children. As of the early 2010’s, one billion of the world’s 2.2 billion children are in poverty, making it nearly half of the world’s children. Child exposure to the cruelty of poverty can be extremely damaging both emotionally and psychologically - going as far as to cause childhood trauma. Traumatic experiences in children due to poverty are excellently represented and executed by Jeannette Walls, Theodore Roethke, and Arthur Dobrin.…

I joined my friends to visit the counselor. But, the bully’s words from that morning were echoing in my head. “So, Jordan, how’s the hate club going?” She’d picked up on our idea to go and tell the school counselor from a friend of hers. She caught my evading and beet red face and took her story as the true one. We weren’t starting a hate club for anyone. We were just defending ourselves. But the trip to the counselor went by quicker than I imagined. After we made our case to her, she told us that she’d help us.…

    Bullying and Fun Thing

Schools from all over the world should really start preventing all this bullying thats going on. I find it bad that everyone makes fun of everyone. Either if it’s cyberbullying or just bullying, it’s a problem for a lot of students. In order to prevent bullying and all of this harassment, there’s so many things that I’d think can solve this problem. One of the first things that i think could be a solution for all of this would be talking to all of their parents, have a meeting about it, because most of their parents are also bullies. For example, that mother in Missouri who was making pretend she was a guy named Josh Evans on myspace and was cyberbullying her daughters friend just because she wanted revenge on that poor little girl and then she committed suicide. This all needs to stop! Parents are supposed to be setting an example for their children but they’re really not doing that correctly.…

“Can you ever escape your past?” Can any of us escape our past? No matter bitter or sweet, we will never be able to forget what happened in the past of our lives or escape from what has happened in the past. This is the caption that drew my attention to this achingly tender love story about the power of love and a story of miracles that will stay with me forever. The author, Nicholas Sparks has weaved this story around two lovers who face many barriers to win their true love and be together. Even though it may seem a typical romantic love story to some, I think it’s a unique one that proves true love never dies and the author has done a great job to keep the readers enthralled to the book for long hours. I was more inspired by the fact that this was the true story about the grandparents of Spark’s wife, who had been married for more than 60 years, which means that this isn’t a fairy tale but real life happening. The book was published in 1995 by the Time Warner Book Group, and from the first week of release it was on “The New York Times” best seller list for more than one year.…
