War stories is not what everybody believe it to be about. O'Brien offers abstract commentary on storytelling. A war story is never told actually the way it happen.
In the story the narrator say, “And in the end, of course, a true war story is never about war (799)”. Wars stories is about everything that goes on because of the war and not the war itself. The narrator mainly talks about the memories he had with his friend Rat. He also writes about the things happening after his friend past. He never says anything in his writings about fight agents any enemies, which war is manly about fighting enemies and protecting the United States. A true war story can be difficult to believe and, with wonderful irony, points out that often, in a genuine war

He's telling us that if it wasn't for a few mundane details sprinkled here and there into the story, the horror of the reality he endured would be beyond our belief.
