True Western Hero
The Measure of a True Western Hero

What defines a true western hero? A typical western hero is usually a frontiersman, cowboy, or sometimes an authorative law abiding figure, such as a sheriff, who has qualities, ethics, morals, and talents that stand above common standards. What exactly are the qualities that separate the true western heroes from the character that has good intentions, but is not a true hero? In the classic Western film Stagecoach directed by John Ford, John Wayne’s character, Ringo Kid, and John Carradine’s character, Hatfield, undoubtedly both performed good deeds, but there is no argument that Ringo Kid is a true western hero. Hatfield did not demonstrate true western heroic traits that could compare to the traits that Ringo Kid exemplified in the film. Heroic traits such as honesty, courage, being non-judgmental, and selflessness prevailed in Ringo more so than Hatfield.

Throughout history, there have been an incalculable number of heroes; that can be through reality or fictitious. From viewing the clips from this assignments and reading various articles regarding heroism, there are multiple aspects that determine exactly what a hero should be. In regards to the Spiderman video, Aunt May explains that a hero is someone that is courageous, self-sacrificing, and sets examples for others. Likewise, an article I read describes a hero as someone who is courageous, selfless, humble, patient, and caring. In my opinion, a hero is an individual who cares more about the life of others than themselves; they would do anything in their power to protect others as well as the world around them.…

The dictionary says that a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. This definition couldn’t possibly describe Fredrick Douglas, Jim, and Huckleberry Finn any better. While of course, these three are certainly not the first that come to mind when thinking of heroes, they all completely fit the bill. Douglas is a hero because of his journey out of slavery and because of his moral development, and how his story affected nations. While Huck and Jim go through a similar journey by escaping from the slavery of society, and through their moral developments, they started difficult, but important, conversations about race and prejudice at the time. However, as they compare, they are all…

What characteristics describe heroes? How can one tell a hero apart from an ordinary person? My definition of a hero is a person who will achieve their goals, no matter how difficult their situations are. A hero also needs to be motivational, kind, courageous, and strong at heart. A hero will do everything possible to live up to their beliefs and do the moral thing. Now, a new question arises: Is Okonkwo, the main character in Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart, a hero? Some might say that he’s a hero – after all, he is a powerful, prosperous, and well-respected man. Nevertheless, I believe that Okonkwo is not a hero; he doesn’t show the characteristics of being kind nor motivational. He doesn’t try his best to do the moral thing, and…

The film consists of many cliché western characters. There is a banker, an outlaw, a prostitute, a doctor, a gambler, and a pregnant woman. These characters are categorized by social class. The banker, the pregnant woman, and the gambler are considered upper class. The outlaw, the prostitute, and the doctor are considered lower class. Ford emphasizes the social prejudice that is present between the two classes by using composition of mise-en-scène. In the dinner table scene, Lucy Mallory cannot bear eating next to, Dallas, the prostitute. Therefore, Hatfield escorts Lucy Mallory to the opposite end of the table. The use of space in the scene depicts the division between the upper class and the lower class. Because of the social status of Ringo Kid and Dallas, the characters in the upper class try not to associate themselves with them.…

It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between a hero, a coward or perhaps somewhere in between. A hero is someone whom goes above and beyond the actions of an ordinary citizen. On the other hand a coward is someone whom is presented the opportunity to do something great and be a hero and steps down instead of up. Norman Bowker can be justifiably called all of these at different times in his life.…
