Tuesdays With Morrie By Mitch Albom

Morrie Schwartz once said “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live” (Albom 82). Tuesdays with Morrie is a book written by Mitch Albom about Mitch’s old college professor Morrie Schwartz and his struggle with ALS. Throughout the book Mitch describes how he met with Morrie every Tuesday to talk various parts of life such as family, death, and emotions. The theme of Tuesdays with Morrie is acceptance is the key to life, this is seen when Mitch and Morrie talk about death, feeling sorry for one’s self, and the fear of aging. The theme of the novel can be proved when Mitch and Morrie talk about death. Morrie says that “once you learn how to die, you learn how to live,” (Albom page 82) this is said when Morrie is explaining to Mitch to fully live his life on the fifth Tuesday the two meet. This quote can support the theme because Morrie is saying that in order for someone live their life, one needs to fully accept that one day one will eventually die. Morrie then elaborates on this topic by stating the belief of Buddhists in which every morning when they wake up they ask a “little bird” that sits on their shoulder if they are going to die
Morrie believes that people should not freak out about growing old, and finds it dumb that people make such a big deal about it. “If you’re always battling against getting older, you’re always going to be unhappy, because it will happen anyhow” (Albom page 119). According to Morrie people should learn to embrace becoming older as it brings much more wisdom. Morrie also believes it is dumb to dwell on one’s younger life because when one was younger one didn’t know half the information one knows now. Morrie thinks that people should just accept the fact that everyone grows old and everyone dies and move on.
