Two Latin American Writers

He is a journalist, novelist and short story writer. Likewise, she is the author of several novels and a short fiction collection, as well as plays and stories for children. Both, Gabriel José García Marquez and Isabel Allende have been considered authors of the style known as magical realism. And, similar to Gabriel García Márquez who has been considered as one of Latin America’s greatest 20th-century authors, Isabel Allende has been named as third most influential Latino leader in the world. In these terms, it is necessary to establish that Gabriel García Márquez and Isabel Allende are two famous Latin American writers, but they differ in terms of origin, education, career and awards.

Even though Gabriel García Márquez and Isabel Allende are from South America, their backgrounds are very different. Gabriel García Márquez was born in March 6th, 1928 in Aracataca, Magdalena, Colombia. However, he has lived mostly in Mexico and Europe, and currently spends much of his time in Mexico City. In contrast, Isabel Allende was born in August 2nd, 1942, Lima, Perú. She is daughter of Tomás Allende, who is Salvador Allende’s brother. In 1945 Isabel and her family went back to Chile and lived there until 1953, when they moved to Bolivia, then Lebanon. Finally, they returned to Chile in 1958. And, she currently lives in San Rafael, California, United States of America.

Like García Márquez, Allende studied journalism; however, their studies were very diverse. García Márquez concluded his primary studies at a boarding school in Barranquilla. Then, at the age of twelve he awarded a scholarship to a secondary school for gifted students called the Liceo Nacional in Zipaquirá; besides, he attended at the National University of Colombia and later the University of Cartagena, where he studied law and journalism.     Yes! Alvarez’s impact and legacy was beyond her age, and our time. Her impact and legacy is not only here in the U.S but also in the Dominican Republic. Alvarez is not defined by her awards but the awards that Alvarez won were huge. Alvarez did not win many she only won one for her novel How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents which was the National Medal of Arts which is an award created by the United States Congress in 1984. This is the highest honor given to the arts that one individual can receive. Alvarez also “served as a panelist, consultant, and editor, as a judge for literary awards such as the PEN/Newman’s Own First Amendment Award” (“Pen/Newman”).
