Adapting to a New Environment
Both Wes’s mothers move them out of their neighborhoods in order to provide them with a chance for a future away from crime and drugs. Both Weses try very hard in adapting to their new environment. In the novel The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, Joy, the author Wes’s mother moves him to a better part of the Bronx and puts him into a private school. Mary, the other Wes’s mother, moves to Baltimore County, hoping that the other Wes betters himself. However it only gets worse. The other Wes becomes more involved with his community where as the author Wes ties to figure out where he fits in. Both the author Wes Moore and the other Wes Moore face significant challenges in adapting to their new neighborhoods, however, the author Wes struggles more with figuring out how to “fit in.” Both Weses are challenged with adapting to their new neighborhoods. After moving to the Bronx, Joy, the author Wes’s mother, sought that he wouldn’t go to a public school. All the schools she had gone to as a child were still there, but not the same institutions. “Crumbling walls, faded paint and if you were one of the lucky 50 percent who made it out in four years” (47). It was definitely not clear that you’d be prepared for a college or a job. The other Wes had previously lived in three other places. Now, he is trying to adapt to a fourth location. His new location was only 10 miles away from his old neighborhood. However, thick old trees that lined the streets were evidence of how far he really was from the Baltimore city row houses. The other Wes now lives in Baltimore County. Although both Wes’s adapt to their new neighborhoods, the other Wes fits himself in more quickly than the author Wes. The author Wes had a lot of trouble “fitting in” in his new neighborhood. He is educating himself at Riverdale. Riverdale is a high class, all white school.
