idea that if persons last name was Montague, they were a despicable person. Romeo, who never speaks illy or harms Tybalt,is still harassed by Tybalt for having Montague as his last name. Romeo does “protest [he] never injured [Tybalt] But [actually] ]love[s Tybalt] better than [he] canst devise Till [Tybalt] shalt know the reason of [his] love” (Shakespeare 3.1.69-71). Romeo never wants to harm Tybalt and has no intention of doing so, as Romeo is in love with Capulet; he therefore cannot hate Tybalt for being one as well. Romeo tries desperately to prevent Tybalt from causing harm, but Tybalt’s despise for Romeo leads him to fighting and then killing Mercutio in the attempt of killing Romeo. Tybalt is ultimately what leads to Romeo’s banishment, as if Romeo had not killed him, he would still have been in Verona. It is possible that if Tybalt were not as dedicated to tormenting Romeo, this would have prevented the many events that ultimately led to Romeo and Juliet's demise.
