U High Creek Water Quality
In this experiment, the question being asked was: “What is the water quality of the U-High stream based on the water invertebrates found?” The purpose of this experiment was to determine the water quality of the U-High creek. The data was obtained by collecting soil, algae, and water from the U-High creek and identifying the number and types of invertebrates that were found from the samples. The prediction made was that the U-High creek’s water quality was poor based on the first observations of beer cans and other litter found near it, but the original hypothesis of the water quality being poor is rejected. There were three types of invertebrates found: pollution sensitive, pollution moderate tolerance, and pollution tolerance. Each of these groups resulted in having six different species found in the U-High creek. The pollution sensitive species included caddisflies, riffle beetles, stoneflies, mayflies, snipe larvae, and water penny larvae. Runoff is a problem when farmers use too much nitrogen on their crops to help them grow and the excess nitrogen flows into creek and other bodies of water when it rains. This excess nitrogen causes more algae to grow in an algae bloom, which causes the bacteria that eats this algae to multiply as well and use up all the oxygen in the ecosystem. This leaves other organisms to die in the process called eutrophication. Another way that humans can affect a water ecosystem is by littering near or even far away from a body of water. Wind, runoff, and other conditions can carry the rubbish, such as plastic bags, bottles, and paper, into the creek which decomposes over time and leaves harmful chemicals and gases.     This lab investigates the question, what is the water quality of the U-High creek based on micro invertebrates found in the creek? There are many factors that affect the quality of water such as phosphorus and nitrogen levels, dissolved oxygen, and pH. Phosphorus and nitrogen in water can increase the growth of aquatic plants and algae, leading to the decomposition of dead plant material and the removal of dissolved oxygen from water. The total nitrogen concentrations for freshwater should be no more than 1.3-2.2 milligrams per liter and the phosphorus levels should also be low. It is not good to have low levels of dissolved oxygen in water because only organisms such as leeches, snails and roundworms can survive while many other invertebrates would die.     One of the major sources of water pollution is organic pollution, which is becoming more and more pressing on the environment because of the growing population of the world. It's a simple concept, the more people there are in one area, the more waste they will produce. For example, in a city there are so many people that the sewage plants and the environment can't take care of all of the waste and function in its usual manner. The sewage plants do their best, but the secondary discharge that gets into the water supply causes great problems. The excess waste acts as a food source for algae and the growth rate is uncontrollable. This situation is known as eutrophication, where algae growth is out of control and the water becomes oxygen depleted. There are natural cycles of eutrophication in the spring and fall, but the body of water can deal with those amounts. When excess waste is added to the water the body of water can no longer control the growth of the algae and the water soon becomes algae ridden and oxygen depleted. The water becomes oxygen depleted because the dead algae goes to the bottom and uses the oxygen in the deeper water to decompose, but if there is too much dead algae all the oxygen is depleted.
