Conodoguinet Lab Report
The 101 mile long Conodoguinet Creek flows through about nine different municipalities, so testing for pollution and water quality is extremely important. To figure out the water quality of the creek however, we first needed to identify which tests to do. Realizing what the cause of pollution is, was our first problem. But, using prior knowledge of acid rain and eutrophication in Pennsylvania, we found out that those were, in fact, our main problems/causes of pollution in the Conodoguinet. When figuring out which specific tests needed to be completed in order to get an accurate water quality reading, we discovered that we had to evaluate different macroinvertebrates, test for pH, alkalinity, nitrates, phosphates, dissolved oxygen, etc. and also test the speed and velocity of the moving water. …show more content…
My hypothesis was, if the velocity of the water is higher, thAn the water moves slower. We tested the velocity and speed in seven different locations and had a variation of results. In location one, we found that the velocity of the water was 32.04 and the water had traveled 257cm in 8.02 seconds with a depth of 37cm. In location two, the velocity of the water was 31.3 and the water traveled 263cm in 8.4 seconds with a depth of 56cm. In location three, the velocity of the water 30.35 and the water traveled 255cm in 8.4 seconds with a depth of 48cm. In location four, the velocity of the water was 30.32 and the water traveled 282cm in 9.3 seconds with a depth of 50cm. In location five, the velocity of the water was 34.92 and the water traveled 285cm in 8.16 seconds with a depth of 39cm. In location six, the velocity of the water was 43.49 and the water traveled 284cm in 6.53 seconds with a depth of 31.5cm.     CENV 6128- Hydraulics laboratory exercise 1 Sharp Crested Weir- Flow Volume and Mid Channel Flow Velocity Description of Experiment The experiment took place in the Hydraulics laboratory of the University of Southampton and was conducted using the labs 12m flume. At the end of the flume was a sharp crested weir set 150mm above the bottom (Figure 1). The flume was set to three different valve settings, with water height measured for each. The time was then taken for a small floating object to flow between two points 2m apart (Figure 2), time was recorded using a stopwatch. This was repeated four times for each valve setting to allow an average time to be determined in order to calculate the flow volume as a product of velocity and area.
