The 101 mile long Conodoguinet Creek flows through about nine different municipalities, so testing for pollution and water quality is extremely important. To figure out the water quality of the creek however, we first needed to identify which tests to do. Realizing what the cause of pollution is, was our first problem. But, using prior knowledge of acid rain and eutrophication in Pennsylvania, we found out that those were, in fact, our main problems/causes of pollution in the Conodoguinet. When figuring out which specific tests needed to be completed in order to get an accurate water quality reading, we discovered that we had to evaluate different macroinvertebrates, test for pH, alkalinity, nitrates, phosphates, dissolved oxygen, etc. and also test the speed and velocity of the moving water.…
The field trip to the Conodoguinet creek taught me a lot about water pollution. The results of the water we tested showed positive. On the scale the numbers shown below seven so the creek is not very polluted. This means the phosphates and nitrates are not high in the creek so the neutralise isn’t hurting anything. We saw some algae that was eutrophicating the richness of the pollution. The one thing our group did not see are crustaceans because the creek was fresh water. The results were no different from what I had expected because Cherry Creek is man made that runs parallel to Denver with sewage running off into the creek. Some human errors in this experiment could have been the fact that we did not perform this experiment. Also the people that did the experiment could have miscounted organisms. In this experiment, the question being asked was: “What is the water quality of the U-High stream based on the water invertebrates found?” The purpose of this experiment was to determine the water quality of the U-High creek. The data was obtained by collecting soil, algae, and water from the U-High creek and identifying the number and types of invertebrates that were found from the samples. The prediction made was that the U-High creek’s water quality was poor based on the first observations of beer cans and other litter found near it, but the original hypothesis of the water quality being poor is rejected. There were three types of invertebrates found: pollution sensitive, pollution moderate tolerance, and pollution tolerance. Each of these groups resulted in having six different species found in the U-High creek. One of the major characteristics of Coal Creek is its lack of vertebrate life. In aquatic environments, a deficiency in biomass can be due to chemical factors or biotic factors. Chemical analysis of the drainage basin have been studied since 2012, but the chemical composition was found to be compatible with life. Previous data gathered from personal communication with Kim Weaver Ph.D revealed that an experiment conducted by Scott Potter showed elevated aluminum concentrations within Coal Creek. Further analysis conducted by Anthony London revealed that chlorophyll samples collected from the creek fluoresced in the yellow spectrum. The sources of this pollution are many, and the culprits as equally diverse. With over 20% of the world’s freshwater supply residing in them, the North American Great Lakes are the world’s largest freshwater system (TEACH). Including Lake Erie, Michigan, Huron, Superior, and Ontario, the five lakes are an important source of fresh water and are home to many species of wildlife. However, with the belief that water could dilute any substance, the lakes also became a destination of dumping grounds for many different types of pollutants. Nonpoint-source pollution is another term for polluted runoff; Point-source pollution and Air pollution are a factor as well. Whether it is from precipitation, water washing over the land, car washing or watering crops or lawns, it picks up an array of contaminants including oil, sand and salt from roadways, agricultural chemicals, as well as nutrients and toxic chemicals from both rural and urban areas. There are lots of ways that pollution can get into streams and cause the pollution level to rise. For an example, everybody brushes their teeth, washes their hands, and goes to the bathroom. All of those toxic wastes go into sewers and let’s say an extremely rainy day occurred and flooded the sewers so the level of water is above surface and it flows all the way down to the river. So what happens is that the toxic waste flows into the water and kills living organisms in the stream because it could go through there gills and flow right into their blood stream.
