Can Slavery continue indefinitely?
The Union perpetual
-Lincoln wanted to win the war, but he did not want to destroy the old south
-Congress wanted to transform the south.
-Lincoln wants to abolish slavery because it would cripple the economy, and believed in a gradual proclomation plan
Wartime Reconstruction
-Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 -Liberates slaves that are in states that are at war with the Union only -It crippled the southern economy -Legalized the enlistment of freed slaves into the union army

-Poverty was a huge issue in the city
-Robber Barons were attacked very much, but believed that they had a commandment from God to help the poor (THE GOSPEL OF WEALTH) -The downside of this is that they actually blamed the poor for their condition -The Robber Barons believed the poor could not help themselves
-Salvation army was established in the US in 1879
-Many reformers want to fight this wide spread poverty -They create Settlement Houses -These houses were reform institution -Jane Addams established Hull House in Chicago in 1889 -Located in the poorest neighborhood in Chicago -This house provided counseling, health services, day care services, & education (to adults mostly)
-Religious community also fought poverty -Catholic churches etc offered various services to the poor & new immigrants -Helped them find their way in the cities -Protestant speeches & lectures become very popular events
-Faith based social organizations appeared in the late 19th Century -YMCA was formed (Young Mens Christian Assocation) -YWCA (Young Womens Christian Association

-Most of the crime was pretty minor
-But this made it very dangerous to live in the
