The United States Postal Service was an independent government agency of the United States, but has since been converter into a private entity. USPS was officially formed 45 years ago, on July 1st 1971, but its roots can be traced back to 17th. In the early years, there were many attempts to start a postal office, but most of them were on a small scale. There was a growing demand for families to send letters back home to England. The first postal organization started around 1691, when British government offered the North American colonies grant to start a postal service. The first post office department was created in 1775 and Benjamin Franklin was named the first Postmasters. A postmaster is the official head of a post office and is appointed by congress. The United States Postal Service is the second largest employer in the U.S. USPS has an estimate of 32,000 post offices, and branches nationwide, and approximately 492,000 career employees and 130,000 non-career employees. Most of their revenues comes from the sale of postage and their delivery services. In 2015 USPS had a total revenue of $68.9 billion. Although, USPS operates as a single segment their services can be separated into six different classes, First-class mail, Standard mail, Shipping and Packages, International, Periodicals, and other services. First-class mail are letters postcards, or merchandizes
that are up to 13 ounces domestically, and up to 4 pounds internationally. First-class mail includes personal letter, bills, statements of bank accounts or payments. Standard mail is any item including advertisements and marketing packages, weighting less than 16 ounces for domestic shipping. Standard mail is normally used for direct advertisement to multiple addresses. Shipping and Packages is a special option for high volume shippers of packages such as small businesses. Package services can mail merchandizes that weigh up to 70 ounces. International- mail offer shipping of letters, packages, and merchandizes to 180 different countries. Periodicals are offered for the distribution of newspaper, and magazines. Other services include PO Box services; which offers customers a private and convenient method of mail delivery. Money orders, which gives customer safe and reliable and economical method for remittance of payment. USPS extra services offers a variety of service enhancement that provides proof of delivery or loss recovery. These services include registered mail, signature confirmation, certified mail, and insurance up to $5000.
